Books Explaining Your Fandom

(Anonymous) 2015-03-24 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you ever bought books about your fandom? (Narnia for Dummies, Essays on Supernatural, the works that influenced Harry Potter, Pacific Rim art book, etc.)

What did you get and was it any good? What did you learn from it?

I've read most of one of those books examining influences on Harry Potter. Never got around to finishing it, but I found it pretty interesting because I wasn't familiar with most of the tropes and traditions related to the story.

Many! Some CSI books that talked about the forensics behind the show.

A lot of novels for the shot. Mostly Supernatural (which sucked) and Warcraft (which rock depending on the author).

Also several art books but only when they are on sale. Most recently one for The Watchmen.

Didn't buy em (college libraries are awesome) but I've read a bunch of books about science fiction and fantasy, and in particular LotR.

And they were good. Not perfect, sometimes wrong enough to make me want to scream, but good.

I've bought all the Torchwood tie-in novels, a few for Doctor Who, and the A:tLA art book. I'm not saying they were all worth my money, but they were fun, reading them is quicker than watching an episode for me if I want a fix, so I don't regret it.

I bought Harry, A History - I liked it enough, but it was more about Melissa Anelli's website, so it didn't speak to me in that way because while I'd always relied on The-Leaky-Cauldron for fandom news, that was the extent of my fandom involvement. It spoke even less to people who were only really involved in LJ fandom, which she barely touched on at all. (I was okay with that, because my fandom experience was actually similar to hers. But I could see why LJ people who'd never even heard of half that stuff were confused/annoyed.)

Also, HAH talked a lot about WRock, which I have no interest in.

Henry (Harry?) Jenkins also wrote about the HP fandom in a book, but mostly stuck to the family-friendly stuff IIRC.

Gamer Theory and From Sun Tzu to Xbox

The latter was much more informative than the former, and pretty much filled in or confirmed a lot of how I feel about video games, particularly the tacticool manshooter genre that's so popular these days.

I had one of the books talking about the worlds of Harry Potter, but I don't remember much about it because it got lost in the shuffle of moving back and forth.

I have the novel tie in and graphic novel tie in for Revenge and the graphic novel is well worth it.

I have a bunch of books on the history of Wizard of Oz, between the movies and then also so many of the collectibles.

I've bought several Babylon 5 RPG books, for the tabletop games. I don't know what I've learned, but it's wonderful world building to read it all.

I get the collector's edition WoW game boxes so I have all the art-books from Cataclysm and up(I missed out on getting the WoTK CE and I'm still annoyed about that).

I've also got some of the WoW books and a Warhammer 40k novel.

I have most of the _____ and Philosophy books. I also have a couple books on Trek and science. I have a Buffy essay book and Harry Potter and History.

Basically, I love this type of book. I was a philosophy major for a while before I switched, so I love those ones particularly. The Buffy one is hit or miss (there is an awful essay from Sherilon Kenyon about how Buffy is better when she's weaker because when she's stronger she emasculates the men in her life).

Yes! I just read Cary Elwes's book on the making of The Princess Bride, and it was WONDERFUL. Learned all sorts of inside stories and tidbits. The stories about Andre the Giant alone were worth the price of admission.

Yeah.

I have a ton of tie-in stuff. Most of it is Tolkien related but I have art books for several different movies too. I have some in-depth stuff on Narnia that was really interesting to see what Lewis was going for with regards to religion in those books. I have the CSI graphic novel and some tie-in books. Etc.

I have some Supernatural books that were kind of interesting, especially one that was from earlier in the show's run so it was interesting what they were picking up on then and where they thought things would go. And I have the Supernatural season guides.

The next thing I'm going to get are some annotated additions of some books that look really cool. I just really like to explore more of the worlds and tie-ins are fun. I have some real stinkers but most have something worthwhile in them.

I own a lot of the SGA novels, which range from “amusing and entertaining licenced fanfic" to “so boring, why did I even bother". I stopped buying them when it seems like Sheppard/Teyla was going to be endgame because I don't do that pairing.

I also own a lot of the Lord of the Rings film books. (Art, behind the scenes stuff, etc.) I was given the first Hobbit artbook and absolutely love it; lots of gorgeous concept art. I'd like to buy the others one day.

Let me see, I have the Metal Gear novelization (I've never even read it... Just glanced at the Snake/Otacon parts), and own a fair many of the Halo books and comics as well as the Halo Encyclopedia. I genuinely like all the Halo verse stuff and need to catch up.

I have both art books from the first and second How To Train Your Dragon movies!

Actually, I more like "bought" one and "rescued" another because the first movie artbook was sitting at the local bookstore for so long (it was the only one sold) and it was so dilapidated and worn down from multiple people skimming through it that I actually felt pity for the book and so bought it.

In terms of expanding the world view, the artbooks have a really good job of doing that. It's also really interesting to see how the characters and settings change through multiple designs and adjustments. I also have a thing for concept art as eye candy, and boy do both books deliver on that!

Other than that, the only fandom-expanding book I have is a Godzilla (2014) artbook I bought because I thought it's gonna be the same as the HTTYD ones. It was mixed.

I have the MGS4 novel adaption (very good) and the MGS1 novel adpation (hilariously bad). I'm also really into music biographies and photo books.

Once upon a time, I had The Nitpicker's Guide For Next Generation Trekkers, and adored it.

I devoured those books when I was a kid. Partly, I think, because my parents didn't let me watch much TV, so a ton of my engagement with Trek came from either reading the episode summaries & discussion in those, or from reading the novels and comics.

I think the DS9 and TNG volume 2 ones are still probably floating around my room at my parents' place, come to think of it.

I have The World of the Wheel of Time. I don't like the art very much but I loooove the worldbuilding. I eat up anything I can find about details on cultures, especially the Aiel and the Seanchan.
