Another accent question for non-Americans:

Do you ever have American accents used to sell you things? Like, here there's a Scots lawn fertilizer product that uses a Scottish guy in their commercials (whose accent is dubious).

If so, what kinds of products are sold this way? Can you tell if they use American actors or fake American accents and are the accents any good?

American accents are often used in advertising as a kind of over-egging-the-pudding thing here. Like, the cheesy salesmen who are supposed to be completely OTT. Usually with ridiculously fake white teeth and an orange spray tan.

Oh, now I want to see these commercials.

Off the top of my head I can't think of a specific one (currently living in a house with no TV).

If you want a general example though, search for 'Fast Show Ed Winchester' on youtube.

Stereotypical yes*, other than that only if the Advert isn't filmed in Norwegian and/or they haven't bothered to dub it.

*tho usually not positively.

Depends. The advertising in my country revolves around American accents, British accents, and what I like to call "Singaporean English" which has a distinctive tone if you can listen well.

Then again, I've not watched TV for quite a while now so I have no idea how much of that dynamic has changed over the years.

Snickers ads (you know, the "You get a little angry when you're hungry" ads) here in Australia have always tended to be American, which feels a bit odd because everything else is in Australian accents. I recently noticed a new Snickers ad that was in Australian accents and it was practically a relief.

I wouldn't mind it if it was one of the ads that featured a famous American, because I expect them to have the accent, but the "normal" people in the ads tend to feel off.
