What's the point of icons that are basically just cropped screenshots of characters' faces?

I understand if it's a particularly poignant screenshot or a character has a telling expression on their face or something, but otherwise... I don't get it.

Just personally I think it's fun to imagine that character making the person's post.

Either a) the person looks really good in that picture, b) the expression is cool as you say, c) the person has a minimalist taste when it comes to icons, or d) the person can't figure out how to do anything more complicated than that.

I usually do it because it's a character I find attractive. The shallowest reason, but there ya go. Right now pizza is my main squeeze.

*shrug* I have a few like that; for me it's "Hey, I like this character, I'm making a post about the fandom they're in, icon choice decision done!"

And sometimes it's like going somewhere and wearing a t-shirt with a logo or character: it's an icebreaker. Conversations may spark because of it, and that can lead to longer chats, which can lead to new friends.

Because I don't care to use my own face and I'm not great at digital art.

I would use a landscape or something pretty, but not much is readable at that size.

Yeah like everyone said, cause you like the character or think they're cool/hot/etc! Zelda's my girl and if having her as my icon makes people associate me with her a little bit, then I'm happy.

I use this icon because it's a sim I made and I always found the way Insane sims could get into a fight with themselves and try to choke themselves in The Sims 3. I miss that in S4.

I do this because I don't have the skills or energy to do anything else, and I like the character.

Tangentially related to the previous question, why settle for bad icons at all (and then apologize about them)? First off, I don't think most people care, but if you do (and are apologizing), I'm fairly certain designing icons for the masses is still a thing that photoshop-savvy people do.

For the same reason some people don't wear good clothes - because the effort of figuring out which icons look nice and then tracking down one that suits you just doesn't seem worth it.

Sometimes I want something specific that I can't find elsewhere or I would use someone else's icons. It's easier to just find and upload them anyway imo, but if I can't find icons of the character I want, or of a particular image I like I'll make do.

Will a guy always cheat on their girlfriends at the first opportunity that presents itself? I don't mean this in the spirit of misandry - I've just... not had any good experiences with boyfriends.

American accents

To non-Americans, I've always wondered this. Have you ever heard of an American accent that sounded too thick or unusual for you to understand? Like most non-American have no problem understanding Californians or New Yorkers because for the most part, their ears are used to it thanks to American media. But have you ever heard of an American accent like say, backwoods Alabama that made you go, "What the hell is she saying? Her accent is too thick." And what did it sound like to you?

I ask because I've heard from time to time Americans saying, "I have no idea what she just said. Her accent is too thick," when talking about non-Americans. Not even ESL non-American but English speaking from birth non-Americans like Scots. For some reason, the Scottish accent trips some Americans. I wonder if the reverse ever happens.

Another accent question for non-Americans:

Do you ever have American accents used to sell you things? Like, here there's a Scots lawn fertilizer product that uses a Scottish guy in their commercials (whose accent is dubious).

If so, what kinds of products are sold this way? Can you tell if they use American actors or fake American accents and are the accents any good?

How can you be attractive?

I've been trying to improve myself to be more attractive to people, but it seems like it's been rather...useless to say the least.

I'm educated (working on getting my PhD) so I don't think that's the issue.

I love video games and a variety of "guy-centric" media.

I've lost a good bit of weight and got my BMI down to 21.9. And I've bought new, more flattering clothes.

I try to go out more -- bars, parks, etc. -- to meet new people. And I've tried chatting with strangers.

But even with all that it seems like no one's well..."into" me, I guess. Maybe I come off as conceited or arrogant? I don't know. I just feel like I'm being passed over. Guys will talk to me and my friends but they'll forget my name while they remember my friends' and sometimes I feel invisible.

Americans, how the hell did you shake off the shackles of being a colony, and then manage to reinvent your own class system, reduce social mobility to practically nothing AND reinvent the slave trade in the form of prisons within centuries of declaring yourself 'the land of the free'? I mean COME ON. You weren't even trying FFS.
