I watched Strictly Ballroom with Spanish speakers from Mexico and Chile and they all argued about what kind of Spanish Fran's family was speaking! The Chileans said it sounded Mexican, the Mexicans said it sounded like they were from Spain.

How about that! XD Maybe it's not just an English-speaking fandom problem then.

In fact, I think the less cultural representation your language or culture has the even more nitpicky you are when it comes up, because it's hardly ever done convincingly and the next depiction might not be along for a while.

Speaking as someone from a small country, it can rankle when the next 10,000 tourists all turn up with the same misconceptions from some movie.

I think the problem is bigger in Spanish,, since no one can even agree on how it's spoken in a specific country (or even a specific region).
