I guess they are being called that because they are the most famous, and pre-time skip they did embody the 'rivals' aspect quite well. But I do agree with you. After the time skip it became 'The Edgy!Asshole!Sasuke Show' and the manga pretty much threw anything to do with the "working hard" and "rivalry" narrative out of the window.

Also Aomine >>>>>>>>> Sasuke. At least Aomine showed regret about hurting his friends. I think Akashi fits more that bill, and even he's not as bad as Sasuke. *Eta: looking back on it, I think Akashi fits more as Gaara. But nobody can get as bad as Sasuke.

Aomine's also hilarious, which Sasuke has never been except maybe in filler episodes. I dunno, somehow that's the distinction that stands out the most to me. Also I can't subtract Aomine from Momoi.

I didn't read all of this because I have a headache and that text against that background aren't working for me atm, but what I got from this is that someone thinks Aomine is like Sasuke? Uh... What?

From all I've seen, Aomine is a much more likable character, with a sense of humor and an ability to regret. And he did so much for Kuroko during the Teiko arc...while Sasuke tried to kill Naruto how many times? I mean, they're quite different stories, why would you even want to compare them?

I facepalm everytime someone compare Shoyou and Kageyama from Haikyū!! to Nardo and Sauce. Also Naruto obsession with Sasuke is as bad as Sasuke own assholery.

There are similarities between them. Hinata and part 1 Naruto are very alike. Both are very energetic and friendly and have to work hard to keep up with everyone else. Whereas Kageyama and Sasuke are the aloof prodigies. Naruto made Sasuke his rival because he was an elite Uchiha just like Hinata made Kageyama his rival because he's the 'King'.

That's where the similarities end though. Sasuke left and became an enemy. Hinata and Kageyama became great partners.

They have some of the same shounen MC tropes, so saying they can't be compared is a stretch. It's just how some people do fandom.

Text: “NARUTO” AND “SASUKE” ARE NOT SYNONYMS FOR “GENERIC SHONEN PROTAGONIST” AND “GENERIC SHONEN RIVAL”

They are actual characters, whose motivations and backstories are specific to the narrative they exist in. I’m mad because I love shonen rivals and it annoys me when they’re called the Sasuke of their series. While my favs never stop working hard to put aside their loner habits for the sake of the team, Sasuke stopped try8ing long ago.

I pointed this out to someone on Tumblr and received this reaction pic in reply. Yeah, I’m overly invested in anime, w/e.

B!S: To illustrate the shallowness of the comparisons made, I’ve noticed that Aomine EDaiki of KnB has never been called Basketball!Sasuke. Probably because he’s buff and dark-skinned, not pale and lean-looking like the other so-caled Sasukes.

THANK YOU! Uhg, it's so annoying. The rivals in my anime aren't like that, and yet Furuya keeps being called baseball!Sasuke. (or Baseball!Haru)

WHY must everything be compared to everything?

And Eijun is baseball!Eren. SHut uppppppppppppppp.

Naruto and Sasuke are a pretty iconic example of rivals so there is nothing wrong with drawing comparisons. There are a lot of rivalries based on the optimistic hardworker vs the aloof prodigy.

On the other hand I also think pretty much every rival character is written better than the disaster that is Sasuke. Sasuke is as edgy as they come and he's not even a 'rival' the majority of the story.

It just shows how times have changed - my ultimate shounen rival pair would be Goku and Vegeta... (Vegeta is an infinitely better character than Sasuke, too)

Yes, almost everyone making these jokes knows that the characters aren't identical to Sasuke and Naruto, just like they know shared VAs or similar designs don't mean a real connection. No one's saying you have to find it funny but complaining like this makes you part of the joke.

Between this secret/thread and all those "[character] is more than [trait]" posts that are all over my dash lately I think anime fandoms have lost their sense of humor.
