There is nothing terrible about this pairing. I maintain that their relationship has super homoerotic moments, and Cloud can date him, for chrissake. This is the only pairing I've genuinely shipped that hasn't had a fandom, but should. And the only time I'll make the claim that the only reason this pairing wasn't popular is because Barret's black. I used to say "non-bishounen" but frankly, bishounen plus bigger muscle guy gets shipped all the time...

I don't ship Cloud/Barret, but because Barret was formerly married to a woman, has an adopted child, and is still clearly not over his wife's and his best friend's death and the wreckage of his hometown.

It's not because he's black, because I *do* ship him with Dyne. Just not with Cloud.

^ I bring up the woman thing because Barret strikes me as very straight with Dyne being the exception if there was to be an exception at all.

Different interpretations and all, but I don't think Barret ever has any romantic interaction of reference at all with anyone (except arguably Cloud). I mean, even references to his wife are not really written romantically, so I can't get how his sexuality is coded either way.

Yeah, that's why I ship him with Dyne. He seems to have more feelings toward his best friend than his literal wife. Or rather, I ship him with Dyne in the *past,* before the present day plot of FF7 for the same reasons I don't ship him with anyone else in the game. Traumatic things and not being able to get over them are completely able to block romance. If you're so focused on taking a huge corporation down that you don't let anything else get in the way, that includes romance.

Either way, it has nothing to do with him being black, and I don't ship Cloud with anybody at all.

Hey, and that's cool, I'm not trying to claim that if you don't ship Cloud/Barret you are racist.

I am suggesting, though, that an enormous fandom that has shipped Cloud extensively with minor characters, or characters he hardly interacts with, and loves slash, that there's something fishy about Cloud/Barret being nonexistent in the fandom. Especially since Barret ticks all the boxes of a popular romance option, not to mention the game uses the possibly pairing for humor (Barret being a date option, Cloud being able to tell Don Corneo that Barret's his boyfriend, etc). The fact that the pairing is overlooked completely is just odd to me, and frankly, I think if Barret weren't black, this wouldn't be the case.

I think it would've helped if those options hadn't been so obviously played for laughs in the game.

I found those scenes funny but not emotionally real like Barret's interactions with all of Corel or even with Cloud when he shows support of him at later points like post Aeris death. I guess what I'm trying to say is there are plenty of scenes where Barret and Cloud *do* have 'emotional talks' for lack of better words, and I can see where someone would ship Cloud/Barret, I just personally don't... but the date scene and the fact that Cloud can tell Corneo of all people that someone is his boyfriend are not the scenes I'd choose to point to if/when arguing for the ship. To me it actually detracts from rather than supports the ship imo *because* it makes it out to be a joke like lolol how ridic is this and nobody should be taking it seriously!!

Like the ability to make Zell's favorite color pink in FF8. LOLOL a guy liking pink, it's funny right? Even if it *were* canon by word of god the game plays it in a way that most people would assume it's a joke so most players would assume the opposite, that it's *not* true.

TL;DR I can see why you'd ship it but I think a lot of why other people don't ship it is because the game makes it out to be a joke.

I don't know anyone else who ships Barret/Dyne though so lol @ me too I guess

Where were you going to see Cloud extensively shipped with anyone but Tifa, Aeris, or Sephiroth?

But I'm not sure how Barret formerly having a wife relates to his relationship with Cloud? I think him "not being over it" is mostly related to his guilt about the whole incident, considering he was the one that convinced everyone to let Shinra come, and they massacred everyone... so he's blamed himself. That's pretty traumatizing after all. He hardly ever brings up his wife at all, actually, so I have trouble thinking that he's specifically still attached to her memory.

I mean different strokes and all, but I'm not sure I see how a traumatic backstory negates the possibility of romance.
