I disagree with your use of the word "ban" but yeah, I'm annoyed the artist felt the need to have it pulled because of internet outrage. :/

He pulled it less because of the outrage and more because he agreed that it didn't fit with the comic's current tone.

He was commissioned for a cover. The Batgirl producers didn't like it, were never going to run it, and he agreed that it didn't fit. The reaction on tumblr and other places had little to nothing to do with any decisions to run it, except to make people appalled that those who objected were getting death threats.

Specifically the artist was outraged that his "supporters" were sending abusive death threats to people who didn't like it. He'd looked at his cap badge and realized there was a skull on it.
