I heard about a convention which is going to have POC rooms.

Kinda feeling a little iffy about that. I suppose POC need a space to feel space from white folks, but the whole thing seems vaguely regregationy

The thought that anyone might think they need a space where they'd be safe from me leaves me speechless.

OK. The thought of somebody needing a safe space away from my mother leaves me speechless. 'Folks' is nothing but a collection of individuals.

Just popping in (a day later, sorry) to say I get you.

If anyone says "I'm afraid of/can't handle gay people and need a safe space," there are immediately people saying "Why am I this big scary thing just because you've had a bad experience?" (Same applies for anti gay-marriage folks, it's "Why don't you want ME to be able to get married.")*

A group is the sum of its parts. When you're afraid of or against the group, you're afraid of or against the ones who make it up, especially when generalizing in the way a "POC-only" (or a "White-Only")room does.

*None of the anti-gay beliefs listed above are belief I hold, just the easiest example of why people are being contrary jerks to you.

I've deleted my account because this place isn't fun any more, and I need to stop spending my time here, but thank you for taking the time to listen and reply (and to express the point I was trying to make far better than I did!).

The moment we say "All x are the same (and we need a place where we'll be safe from them)" we are in prejudice territory and it does not, it must not matter what the characteristic x is, it is still prejudice. In the short term, it may be OK to say that straight, white (typically) men are a legitimate target because of their historical position of privilege but, in the long term, that will not advance equality, it will only shift prejudice sideways, and if we honestly believe in social justice, we have to point that out.

Which convention?

I'm not even gonna defend that. There is nothing I can possibly say to make that not comically awful.

I'm a PoC and that idea rubs me the wrong way a bit. Then again, I don't live in the US.

I'd like to think if I were white I'd like to learn about fandom PoC issues. But my presence probably would affect the discussion in those rooms, and would take away from the experience of the people it was supposed to benefit. So I guess I'd turn to online stuff instead, or non- specifically-PoC functions.

So after thinking that through, I'm fine with the idea as long as the rooms are specifically targeted for PoC issue discussion, and similar non-segregated (man, what a word) ones are available. Like women's issues forums: some are women-only, some invite everyone. But even so, the inevitable reverse racism screaming crowd would make me sad.

I forgot about white passing and mixed-race people. I don't have faith in the gatekeepers.

I can see it. There was an incident at pantheacon which was something along the lines of yet another straw on the camel's back. So the POC space became a spot where people who were angry about it could discuss the issue. It also wasn't POC-only, just POC-focused.

Exactly. I'm not seeing where one even gets "safe space" or "POC/White-Only" from this, unless they're the type that thinks their college was reverse-racist because it had an Asian Student Union.
