Honestly, romance plots stop being interesting once they stop being "will they? Won't they?" and get made official. Once they couple up, I automatically find them slightly less interesting.

The only thing worse, for me at least, is a baby plot.

Once Castle goes there I'm done.

Will they/won't they is a dumb character dynamic to build a show on. You can maybe get away with it on a strong ensemble piece, where you can keep it in the background and rotate in the stories of other characters, but in a show focused on a minimal number of leads it is dumb. You can't keep up a will they/won't they scenario for more than a season or two without it becoming stale, and once you resolve it the show is over. It is an easy one because fans gobble it up at first, it is such a lazy way to get a fanbase on the hook because it is essentially tailormade for lazy fanfic, but it is ultimately a dumb way to get one too.

NAYRT - I agree, but I also think that's generally the crux of most cop-partner dramas? Many, at least. Not sure, that's just what I understand from critics. (Castle's the only cop show I've ever really watched - okay, B99, but that's a comedy.)

However, as I said, I agree, especially that it helps when you have a strong ensemble piece. I also like it better when it could actually go either way. I don't think anyone doubted that Kate and Castle would get together.

DA

According to "word of God" the whole point of the show wasn't "Will these two get together?" it was "How do they get together?" Which is fine, I'm writing a story like that myself. However, my problem came in Season 5, when once they did get together, instead of Kate being the very strong and independent female character we'd learned to love. They had her instantly falling back onto some stereotyped female insecurities "Oh, he's a millionaire and I'm not, what do I do and think, we're so different?!" Which she hadn't cared about until that very moment. And, imo, the Kate who'd been built up over those 4 seasons prior never would have cared about.

The Season 4 finale was pretty much the death of the show for me. That's when they destroyed Beckket. Season 5 I gritted my teeth through and reading episode summaries of Season 6 makes me glad I gave up.

It feels like a lot of writers can't write an interesting, solid, romantic relationship. Even if they had a interesting, solid relationship before the two became a couple. (Seriously, just add some hand holding and kissing and change nothing else! It's not that difficult!)

I know they were always going to get together, but what I mean is that once they did, I got bored of it.

I think the problem is it's usually done so badly when they couple up. But I find that now I prefer a well-done established couple to the will they/won't they stuff.
