Unpopular mostly because I'm a Democrat, but... I think teacher's unions often do more harm than good because bad teachers and practices are often protected.

I agree, and I'm normally pro-union.

Agreed because I still remember reading a story (and recorded proof) of a special needs teacher outright bullying a kid.

Bad teachers who harm kids should be more easily allowed to punish. We're trusting children with these people.

Also I've heard stories from my mom of some bullying teachers.

I was in Special Ed as a child. My sixth-grade teacher said (to my younger sister) that I would never graduate high school.

The principal was very sorry that she couldn't do anything about it.

Oh wow that's incredibly shitty to say. *hug* I'm so sorry that happened to you.

Men suck. Not all of them, but far far too many of them.

This is how I feel about police unions.

This is such a commonly made argument, and I'm open to the idea that it's possible, but I'd really like to see some evidence that the problem is endemic that doesn't just come from some shit that they did in New York in the 80s or something

Because it seems to me more likely that the reason we have a lot of shitty teachers is not providing enough resources and enough money

DA

Yeah, I'm sort of closer to this opinion, myself. I don't think the unions themselves are the problem, but perhaps symptomatic of bigger issues in our education system. When even excellent teachers are laid off or underpaid and placed under increasingly absurd expectations, it tends to lead to defense of even the shittiest people and practices if it means banding together to keep your job.

I don't know much about the subject, so honest question: is there something about teacher's unions that makes them different from other unions? I don't see why this same claim couldn't be made about any union.

DA from all the above, and take this with a huge heap of salt, because I'm not a teacher, but I expect part of the problem is the way/what teachers (in the US, anyway) are expected to teach.

Like, I belong to a city employees' union that basically covers everyone who's not a first responder, since police and firemen have their own unions. And if you work in the the Parks and Recreation or Library department or the Treasurer's office or whatever, your job is mostly gonna stay the same. The higher ups set new departmental goals, or you have to learn a new software program and all the ways it sucks, or your budget gets slashed, or whatever, but the whole way you do your job doesn't get shaken up every couple of years.

But every new Presidential administration has a new roadblock to put in the way of actually teaching kids, and there are always more (and more ridiculous) standardized tests to administer and teach to. Teachers burn out at a ridiculous rate, and there just aren't enough of them. I think if all the incompetent ones got fired, the remainder still wouldn't be able to do a good job teaching, because they'd be left with a hundred kids per class.

And teachers are (rightfully) under more scrutiny than many union paper pushers, because they work with kids. Not everyone who has a bad experience paying their water bill or library fine or whatever is going to complain about it, but pretty much every kid will complain to their parents if their teacher sucks.

Yes, there's a difference

teacher's unions are still actually capable of doing shit and haven't been totally defanged like most American unions

ia 100%. I'm normally very pro-union, but I'm anti-teacher's unions.

I was bullied (along with several other kids in my class) by my fifth grade teacher. She went so far as actually destroying assignments we'd turn in, to make our grades lower. Several parents reported her, but she was never fired and never even disciplined. And then in both middle and high school I had teachers who verbally attacked multiple students (including one who used ablist and racist slurs at several girls), who recieved multiple complaints and reports from both students AND parents, who also were never fired.

And in high school I had a teacher who was so senile that she literally spent 9/10 class periods napping at her desk or browsing the computer. I got maybe two hours worth of instruction for her during an entire year? But the school couldn't replace her because she was union and she'd been with the district 40+ years.
