Unpopular RL Opinions

We've had unpopular opinion threads, but they're sometimes more internet unpopular as opposed to unpopular in, well, real life. (Let's face it, internet culture is very different than everydayculture.) So tell me your RL unpopular opinions. (CAN still touch on fandom, since fandom in and of itself can be RL unpopular...)

Unpopular mostly because I'm a Democrat, but... I think teacher's unions often do more harm than good because bad teachers and practices are often protected.

I don't think animal rights trump human rights. I also don't think that there's a moral superiority to vegan/vegetarians. I think that our species evolved to eat meat and that is one of the reasons we became a dominant species and developed higher brains, and it's stupid not to continue to do what our ancestors did. I don't buy the argument that because we're "superior" or whatever to animals that we should be held to a higher standard when it comes to eating meat or producing meat for consumption.

I don't think animals should be tortured but I am okay with industrial farming and animal testing. Human lives mean more than animal lives to me.

(Disclaimer: I don't think there's anything wrong or stupid about people choosing to be vegan or vegetarian but I don't think they have any right to lecture me on liking to eat meat or what kind of conditions animals are kept in to produce the meat I like.)

America's party system is ridiculous to me, and I'm honestly not sure I don't think most people here are in the middle anyway. I think the wrong people get elected to office because voters are forced to choose between the lesser of two evils.

I'm situationally racist because I hate extremism. I don't see anything wrong with this but I know that most people would conclude (perhaps rightly) that I'm an asshole.

I think people who scream "But the mentally ill!" as a reason to support gun regulation really have no clue what they're talking about with regards to mental illness.

And I say this as someone who agrees we need more regulation on guns.

I don't think capitalism works. It's a fine theory but in practice all we've ended up doing is screwing over large portions of our population.

Like the United States is going to eventually need to have a revolution to get rid of all of our laws that protect the rich and screw over the poor. We are losing out middle class because all the money is going to the super rich, I don't understand why more people aren't tired of this.

I am for the legalization of recreational drugs.

But that's just because I want people to STFU about them.

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia is actually pretty okay on some issues and is by far not the worst Justice on the Court. (Also I want to go on one of his and Justice Kagan's hunting trips, because my god.)

I won't take you seriously if you self-diagnosed.

I mean, if you say something like "well, I have xyz traits, and I think that I have (whatever), and I'm not sure, but the coping strategies for (whatever) are helping me until I can get diagnosed" that's one thing, but the "oh yeah I totally have autism and ptsd and anxiety and depression because I read about it on the internet and that sounds like me"?

I don't think it's immoral to abort babies with disabilities. You never know how severe they're disability is going to be, and if you're going to have the strength/funds/ability to care for them as they grow up.

I don't trust or like pit bulls. They are consistently at the top ranking for dogs that bite. Also, out of the top dog breeds that are known for biting, they can do the most damage BY FAR.

I'd never let a pit bull around a child.

Also, pit bull lovers can be really fucking annoying. They are like gun right activists in how gungho they are about pits.

Let's talk about feminism

- I get really annoyed whenever people bring up what feminism has done in the past as a reason for it still being good. If you think that it's still relevant/good, fine, that's one thing, but things like feminism can in fact change over time. Plus, early feminism was pretty goddamn racist/transphobic/homophobic/etc. so whenever people act like it did all these great things in the past, it bugs me, because yes, if you were the right kind of woman.

- Whenever people reply to someone who isn't feminist with talking about how "stupid" that person must be, or how they must only be against feminism because they're abused/their guy S.O. told them to be, I wonder if the person who's against feminism has run into feminists like that all their life. I wouldn't want to be a feminist if I was told I only disagree with them because my boyfriend abuses me. (Especially when I don't even have a boyfriend).

- I think some of the things feminists are fighting about right now are really dumb.

- I hate Beyonce, and I don't think her works are "super feminists" and honestly I find "Who runs the world (girls)" to be trite and boring.

- I think the comparison of condoms to tampons when it comes to what should be free or not is really fucking dumb. Condoms cost approx. $0.02~$0.03/condom to make, they can be used by any genital configuration (they can be cut into dental dams if necessary), and they help prevent both pregnancy and transmission of STD's/STI's. Tampons help half the population, and while I can't find an exact cost, I'm willing to bet that they cost more than $0.02~$0.03/tampon to make.

Fandomish opinion

I really dislike the way abusive parents are written. I especially dislike how all their characterization is stripped down and their own skeletons are ignored to turn them into monsters to hurt the woobie.

The reason I'm thinking about this is because I've seen a lot of people lately arguing that Howard Stark didn't love Steve Rogers or Tony. Because he said Tony was his greatest creation and that Steve was the one good thing he'd ever done up to that point.

Which, yes, it's objectifying. But if you're arguing that Howard didn't love them, you're basically saying he's a sociopath/psychopath and incapable of love. Here's the thing -- people are flawed and sometimes have complex or selfish reasons mixed in with their love.

Howard calling Tony his "greatest creation" IS objectifying yes, but it's also reflective of the fact that they're both engineers -- they're both people who create and take pride in their inventions. Howard saying that is his way of telling Tony that he's proud of him.

With Steve, you can't divorce the fact that Howard carries an incredible amount of guilt for all the people he helped kill during the war. And that he saw Steve -- who he recognized as a good BEFORE he met him -- as someone he HELPED and who made the world a better place.

Just, the whole way fandom handles abusers and abuse pisses me off. Howard had his own ghosts/demons to deal with. Was he perfect? No, but I'd argue he was no more flawed than Tony.

Also the "A+ parenting" is fucking retarded.

I think animal rights are more important because I dislike people so much.

I hate the tumblr posts that are like "if you're more upset at cops killing a dog over a black person, you're a GROSS RACIST KILL YOURSELF" lol no, I'm upset that some power-abusive cops killed an innocent animal, race has nothing to do with it.

Probably because I'm not invested in most competition, but I don't think steroids or other drug usage in sports is a big deal. You have leagues and class(iirc?) according to size, sex, weight, and whatever. How about authorized drug league.

I'm sick of ppl not trying. I know there's some very legit reasons but right now I follow some people with chronic anxiety who cannot leave their house and spend all their time moping about it, but in an annoying roundabout way of "I know that as a white middle income person I.... BUT" * and blames everyone else for their situation and never take responsibility for themselves.

And I get it, you have a crippling anxiety disorder but as far as I'm aware via tumblr she never fucking tries and just talks longingly over leaving the house. And then I (unfair I know) compare her to a friend I know who's anxiety is so crippling she's on disability benefits - but she actually fucking tries? And sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't but each year she gets a bit better at going out of the house and meeting people and realises well not going to get fucking anywhere if you don't try (sometimes posts about her efforts that failed and done that succeeded and so proud of her for really fighting at it)

But this other person just sits in tumblr picking sjw fights and getting worse each year because they don't try.

I just argh. Probably so annoyed cause one of my personal mottos is that you don't get anywhere if you don't try and seeing someone just sit and wallow, not even confused flailing to indicate trying, drives me nuts.


* they also preface their SJW fights with shit like this and I've shot them down privately via msgs but I just want them to calm the fuck down. They're like a one of those Christian fundie warriors with a sjw flag. Even described herself once as a warrior against evil (and got such a lash back they did a round about apology where they never take responsibility. Or accept if they're wrong.

I think military action is appropriate against terrorist extremism. My reasoning is based on years of academic research and working against terrorist groups. Now, let me explain: I don't like rolling in and mowing down groups of people is cool, but I do think that concerted, precision action against specific people is very much needed.

What most people don't realize is that the most of the leaders of these terrorist groups (and by leaders, I mean like the big guys), tend to be actual predators from affluent countries and affluent backgrounds, with a lot of education and resources. They then use this privilege to essentially extort the poverty and ignorance that small, conservative communities live in, and offer money and resources in return for their service to their religion.

And when they don't prey on the conservative communities, they prey on idealistic, untested patriotic and religious youths who have been sheltered most of their lives from the harsh realities of their countries experiences.

When people start bitching about the countries with the terrorist extremism need to handle it, it makes me want to throttle them. Many of these terrorist groups are the legitimate authority in their country-- they are actually "elected" into power. When they aren't, they have bought large swathes of people in authority to make sure that the legitimate government won't challenge their actions.

One of my Arabic professors literally told us a story when she still lived in Lebanon. Apparently, there was to be a showdown between Hizbollah and another upstart group of assholes. The police showed up to the party to try to get them to turn away, and the leaders in Hizbollah simply told them, "Look. You really should just go, there's no reason for you to die." And the police left. This was in the 2000s, so it wasn't that long ago, and in a country that isn't always known for its terrorist hotbeds.

This is really just a very short cover of why I think outside military presence against terrorist extremism is justified. I could write a whole thesis on this.

And before anyone launches into "well maybe we should just stay out of their business/stop taking their oil/planting false leaders and stop killing them and things will chill down," bitch please. The Near and Middle East as regions (and Africa) are more than capable enough of generating their own problems that Western influence is hardly a drop in the millenia of strife in those regions.

This isn't to say that Western countries haven't fucked up big time over there, but trust me, extremism that has had legitimate rule in countries for decades hardly needs justification to act.

I loathe when people try to explain away my distrust of other women as 'internal misogyny' without even bothering to ask how I came to be that way.

Years of really shitty relationships with other women, some that were toxic, abusive, and manipulative, have me genuinely worried about it happening again. There is no one to blame other than the women (not men) who did this to me and having it completely erased to power someone's women-do-no-wrong feminist moment makes me so angry and hurt.
