And before anyone launches into "well maybe we should just stay out of their business/stop taking their oil/planting false leaders and stop killing them and things will chill down," bitch please. The Near and Middle East as regions (and Africa) are more than capable enough of generating their own problems that Western influence is hardly a drop in the millenia of strife in those regions.

well, i think the argument would be more that if we weren't doing all that shit, the problems that arose out of those societies would be less likely to manifest in the form of terrorism and violence against us, specifically.

i mean, i don't have a problem with military action against terrorism in principle. but i do think it should be relatively constrained by our actual interests. and i tend to think that our interests are much less expansive than others seem to.

Probably not. Western ideals, from the religious to the social, are just enough at odds that they will launch attacks unprovoked, given opportunity and unthreatening opposition.

There have been literally dozens of unsuccessful attacks by specifically Islamic extremists against the United States after 9/11. The only reason they weren't successful and haven't been more of them is because our methods against them are effective.

And besides, they also target non-Western groups unprovoked that have no method of defense, and have been terrorizing them for decades, but this has mostly been offshoots of religious sect differences and tribal warfare. Once the guys from Saudia Arabia and Kuwait and Beirut got involved (around the 1980s), their goals shifted to the West.

These guys aren't just attacking out of self defense, and their continued attacks aren't self defense. They're organizing for the specific purpose of causing harm to groups of people that fit the profile that opposes their religious/political/social ideals.
