Sort of related to one above but...

I think people who scream "But the mentally ill!" as a reason to support gun regulation really have no clue what they're talking about with regards to mental illness.

And I say this as someone who agrees we need more regulation on guns.

I love how there's this triangle of "It's your fault, not mine!" whenever there's gun violence in the U.S. Gun owners say it's all the fault of mentally ill people and video gamers, video gamers say it's all the fault of gun owners and mentally ill people, and mentally ill people blame gun owners. (Surprisingly, I haven't seen mentally ill people blame video games.)

Honestly, where I live it's not the gun owners blaming the mentally ill - it's the people who want regulations going "BUT THE MENTALLY WILL USE THEM!" ...and ignoring that the mentally ill tend to be the victims way more often than the person doing the crime.

Also, I find it vaguely [and depressingly funny] they always side step the "Well then, why not fix the mental health system?" questions.

What the other anon said. I think it's entirely reasonable to object when a "solution" to mass shootings is to put anyone who's sought help from a professional on the same watchlist as felons and people with restraining orders.

I'm always wary of the talk of mental health reform that comes in the aftermath of some kind of tragedy, because I'm skeptical that mental illness treatment based on "we need to do something before they kill everyone!" will end well for anyone.

I'll admit, I'm cynical enough that I just don't believe that they'll do it.

I mean, it needs reform [or, more accurately to be set up as one system in the first place - at least in the US], so I'd support it if it got something *started* just so it's not the complete hellhole it is now...but it won't happen for a long, long time.

I don't believe it either, but I still just don't want to hear people claiming to want to help people who are mentally ill while acting like we're all ticking time bombs.

Ahhh...yeah, I get that. Thankfully that does seem to be changing a little - albeit slowly. So maybe someday they won't treat us like that.
