I think animal rights are more important because I dislike people so much.

I hate the tumblr posts that are like "if you're more upset at cops killing a dog over a black person, you're a GROSS RACIST KILL YOURSELF" lol no, I'm upset that some power-abusive cops killed an innocent animal, race has nothing to do with it.

I don't think if you're a racist if you hold that view. But I do think it's a morally incorrect view to hold, and if I met someone IRL who held that view, I would think much, much less of them.

It's situational, but sometimes I agree with AYRT. For me its about the degree of helplessness. An adult is less helpless than a child. A human is less helpless than an adult.

I think beating up a human is worse than beating up an animal, but I feel worse *for* the animal because it- generally speaking- is much more helpless than the human. Exactly like how I'd feel worse for the child if someone beat a child up, than if someone beat an adult up.

yeah, see, i get why people instinctively feel like that, but i still don't agree with turning into an ethical principle that you feel is defensible

Yes, this exactly. Not saying it's a moral equivalency, but there is a visceral reaction to someone who deliberately torments weaker creatures. And I don't have a problem with classifying that kind of abusive behavior as reprehensible and deserving of contempt.

For me it always comes down to the fact that animals are always innocent whereas this isn't always the case for people.

Even animals that attack only do so because they've been abused or taught to.

Animals are not always innocent. There are several cases in the animal kingdom where animals do things not just to survive, but because they're being jackasses.

And if you go down the "they've been abused or taught to" road you could say that about humans as well.

Like I LOVE animals and I think human definitely need to treat them better, but I actually think we often forget that WE'RE ANIMALS TOO and a lot of the horrible things humanity does is present in the animal kingdom, we just do it on a much larger and much more horrible scale.

Yeah, but humans have the ability to reason, which animals lack (or have a severely limited capacity).

This is also why I feel worse when bad things happen to children and the mentally disabled.

Not to mention that children and the disabled have much less ability to protect themselves or remove themselves from a situation than healthy adults do.
