Re: Let's talk about feminism

I use menstrual cups, but they're an expensive one-time purchase (typically $30+, whereas boxes of pads or tampons are... significantly less) and they aren't for everyone. Even assuming that everyone can get over being grossed out by their menses, cups just physically don't work for everyone.

There are different brands that are different sizes so in theory there should be at least one brand for everyone, but choosing one isn't as easy as popping down to the drug store. Most stores, if they carry reusable cups at all, typically carry only one brand. Where I live, it's usually the Diva Cup, which is one of the biggest cups on the market and least likely to fit someone (especially a first timer) well. If a cup is too small you can work around it, but if a cup is too big it just isn't going to fit.

So at that point you have to order one online, and even then fitting is still guess work. I lucked out and got one that fit on my second try, but most cup devotees have a plethora of cups and use a different one for different days of their period, because your cervix naturally changes position during your cycle and that greatly affects the fit of your cup.

It's also a pain to empty and clean, which makes it not ideal for people who are always on the go, especially if they have to change their pad or tampon multiple times a day in a public restroom.

In the long run you save money, yes, but it's not that easy and it's not suitable for everyone.

That's like saying it's tough to find jeans that fit, so the government should give out sweatpants for free.

I sympathize but the point is tampons literally aren't a necessity

How are they not a necessity?

If you use a rag, what are you supposed to do at work? Wash you bloody rag in the sink? Keep the bloody rag in a plastic bag by your desk when you've changed a new one in?

No. Tampons/pads are absolutely a necessity.

I said nothing about the government giving out anything for free. I was just taken aback that you seemed to think that menstrual cups were an easy solution that would work for anyone, therefore everyone who buys tampons is wasting their money on a luxury.

And that is a silly comparison anyways, because if a pair of jeans doesn't fit you properly, you won't look your best but you can still wear them and be covered. If a menstrual cup doesn't fit you properly you will be in pain.
