He was also my favourite character by far in Mary Poppins.

I read somewhere recently that the author hated what the movie did to him, and I felt warm towards that film in the first time in my life. The songs are catchy but the morality of Mary Poppins is highly dubious.

Mr Banks was responsible for his children as well as going out to work. Meanwhile, his wife just abandoned the family at a moment's notice, yet her husband was painted as the bad guy who needed to be redeemed and change his ways.

Even as a kid, I could see that "save a penny" was a better message than "spend it all today and run away from your responsibilities!" What's so wrong with trying to be prudent?

I'm halfway to being a socialist, but Mr Banks the only one that made sense in that film. As for the chimney sweeps segment, it was a fun dance, but that whole bit about poor people being happier because they have little was incredibly patronising and just skeevy poverty tourism.

I'm 90% socialist so I go with feeding the birds, but I so agree with you about Mrs Banks, and the patronizing rosy view of the life of the working class.

I love singing along to the soundtrack though!

nayrt

I seriously think that film MADE me go socialist.

The banking song is kind of an indictment of capitalist greed.

There's a balance between the two. It's good to save, but it's not good to get so focused on saving that you never live.

Every time I see that part where the film makes fun of Mr Banks for trying to teach his children to save their pocket money, I remember the sub-prime mortgage bubble.

It's baby boomers who grew up on Mary Poppins that caused that disaster.

Well, those people went about it in an unbalanced way. I'm talking about being completely miserly to the point where you rarely do anything. It's how I used to be. I thought being responsible meant striving to never have to buy anything. I was wearing clothes with holes in them not because I couldn't afford new clothes, but because I thought it was wasteful to buy them. And I wouldn't go on trips or do anything with my friends that cost money.

Then, I learned that you can be responsible and save money while also doing things from time to time. I don't buy anything or take on any obligations that I can't afford, but I do spend my money on fun things from time to time, and I give to charity. My life is richer for it, and I'm still saving plenty.

Mr Banks does get his job at the bank back at the end so it's not as if it's saying that the entire system is awful, just that you should have balance. The part where he walks past the house of God to the house of money is important. He stands up against his boss, which isn't entirely the same thing as saying the kids were right in how *they* acted - Bert points it out to them that it's hard to be their father.

It's a pretty complex movie really, I like it a lot.

Oh, don't think Mrs. Banks got let off. She had to abandon her outside activities and stick to the family, too.
