But...you knowing a bunch of people doesn't mean that type of person is the majority.

It's not a scientific survey for sure, but most of the women slashers I meet in fandom who talk about their preferences are also bi, and most of these fic writers are usually about 30-50 years old. A sizeable minority of m/m slashers are lesbian. More rarely, some of them are gay men.

Then I come up against blanket statements that "anyway, slashers are all straight teenaged girls". I saw that one on AfterElton (as it was called) and you think they should know better.

It's that kind of bizarre misrepresentation that just doesn't tally up to many people's actual experiences.

If we survey the fanwriters/fanartists involved in slash, who are the more active participants, I suspect that the straight teenaged girls are hugely outnumbered. Perhaps it's a different case if you just look at slash readers. But the actual creative communities are definitely more diverse than that stereotype.

So? There are a handful of artist/fanfic writers in my fandom that are bi/lesbian/gay and they have slash or femme slash as their favorite pairings.

Not saying straight people who fetishize slash pairings don't exist, but to say they are the only people who enjoy slash is a big fat lie.

Where did anyone say that straight people were the only people who enjoy slash?

From what I've read of fannish history:

Back in the day, when slash was hugely controversial, one of the things that slashers said to reassure people was "oh, we're all a bunch of completely heterosexual housewives."

You know, so that people wouldn't think there were icky gay people in the fandom. (And yes, I know. It was the 60s/70s, homophobia was mainstream).

So people still assume that slashers are primarily or exclusively heterosexual women.
