I don't ship much of anything, but I find the slash fetishizing obnoxious, particularly because it's always, always conventionally attractive, white, hetero-presenting guys y'all get obsessed with.

Have you never heard of yaoi or something?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-27 08:50 am (UTC)(link)
Or fandoms for Asian boybands.

I'm pretty sure most non-Asian fangirls do not see many anime/yaoi characters as Asian. I definitely didn't when I was wrapped up in this stuff.

I don't really know much about Asian boyband fandom. I never come across it; they all seem pretty contained in their niche.

And I did. Do our anecdotes cancel each other out and we'll have to settle for a third option entirely?

IDK. But I honestly would be surprised if yaoi was as popular if the characters couldn't be interpreted as white.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-27 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

I don't think that all or even most yaoi fans interpret the characters as white, but it is actually a big problem in animanga fandoms for people to claim that certain characters are white just because they have light-coloured hair and eyes, even when the characters are explicitly meant to be Japanese.

To put an F!S-friendly anti-SJW spin on it: it isn't at all unusual for young fans on Tumblr to lament that anime and manga are so full of white characters and lacking in characters of color.

And when you look at what yaoi fans ship outside of animanga and boybandom they're uuuusually not ultra progressive fans of slash involving nonwhite men. I'm not judging, I'm just saying.

Yeah, I remember a very interesting Raclacious (I think?) article about how most Japanese people see anime characters as Japanese, but white people read them as white.

And media in general doesn't have an overabundance of "conventionally attractive, white, hetero-presenting guys" and not much else?

[personal profile] bio_obscura 2015-03-27 12:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Not an abundance, but slashers generally don't go for them when they're there (one thing that did surprise me was the popularity of those 2 scientists in Pacific Rim). Teen Wolf is a great example of a fanbase pretty much systematically ignoring an actual gay character when there are straighter, more masculine guys around to ship. Zero love for Oz or Omar from The Wire, either

This argument is SO tired.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-27 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah because popular media and well known shows have such a huge over-abundance of unconventional looking, non-white, queer dudes that people can totally ship, right? RIGHT??

Teen Wolf is a great example. There is an actual gay character in that show that the fanbase pretty much ignores to slash the straight guys.

except he's not a great example because the guy gets barely any screen-time and is forgotten about by the show more often than not, which is something i've seen shippers of all sorts in the fandom express irritation at.

as if fandom doesn't constantly obsess over other minor characters who get barely any screen-time and are forgotten about by their respective series more often than not

Except Derek/Stiles is a totally baseless ship stemming from one (I think) brief interaction. That didn't stop them from being the fandom's most popular ship instantly.
