Yep. I feel this way too. Especially since a lot of slash fic actually makes at least an attempt to provide characterization. It's as good as any het fanfiction anyway.

I feel like 90% of the time, it's just "sour grapes" type fans who are trying to browbeat slash fans because their pairing isn't more popular.

I mean, how often do you see this kind of stuff argued for interracial pairs? Or even femmeslash? More often than not, I see it targeted at popular stuff. Which tells me all I need to know.

No, I think that straight people can be equal opportunity creepsters when it comes to femslash as well. Especially when you look at the pandemic of intimate partner rape experienced by bi women. Bragging about your love of slash or gay culture tells me absolutely nothing about whether you'll be homophobic or biphobic when it really matters.

I think you can probably generalize this to a lot of fandom arguments

or a lot of human arguments, honestly

(Anonymous) 2015-03-26 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
imma let you finish OP, but this doesn't disprove the fact that many slash fans are still straight people, who fetishize gay men, and don't really care about lgbt rights.
The fans you talking about have something in common with those they criticize then.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-27 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think I'd say the "majority." Literally every person I know who likes slash is either gay or bi. Expect for like, maybe two people. The "only straight people like slash!" myth is just that, a myth.

I don't understand this.

I have literally never met a slash fan that doesn't support lgbt rights.

Ever.

The only ones I can think of are conservative men who watch lesbian porn.

But slash fangirls who think it's hot? They are overwhelmingly pro-lgbt. I've literally never seen an exception to this.

I do know of het writers who refuse to write slash and think homosexuality is wrong (on religious grounds) but they're not writing slash (obviously).

It goes both ways OP, like you say there is a lot of people who use the "YOU ARE FETESHIZING HOMOSEXUALITY" to hide they butthurt but a lot of slash fans use the "I WANT REPRESENTATION FOR TEH GAYZ" to justify their rabidness and bash female characters. As a lesbian it make me really unconfortable when slash fans use the "i care for lgtb rights!!!" card to spew hate toward female characters.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-27 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
This is completely true.

All the slash fans I've ever met are pro-lgbtq rights, which is great.

But I HATE HATE HATE when they equate slash fiction with representation or activism. NO. STAHP. It's not the same thing at all.

Actually, no, I'm just a straight guy who is really squicked by straight characters (and even real persons!) being reinterpreted as gay for the sake of somebody's wank fuel.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-27 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
hey buddy you should get over it

well maybe not the real people part, that's maybe more complicated, but who gives a shit about fictional characters being reinterpreted as gay

why is that squicky

Text: I feel that people who spend a lot of time complaining about how it’s problematic or fetishizing when straight people are into slash ships…

…are often more concerned about their ship being less popular or an author not writing for it…

…than about LGBT issues in any shape or form.

I don't ship much of anything, but I find the slash fetishizing obnoxious, particularly because it's always, always conventionally attractive, white, hetero-presenting guys y'all get obsessed with.

And media in general doesn't have an overabundance of "conventionally attractive, white, hetero-presenting guys" and not much else?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-27 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah because popular media and well known shows have such a huge over-abundance of unconventional looking, non-white, queer dudes that people can totally ship, right? RIGHT??

I only complain when they have no idea what they're talking about.

Like no lie I've seen a bunch of people say Cas/Dean is great gay representation because it's obviously so canon do you see how they stare at each other? So don't worry about getting other shows with actual gay characters.

I reserve the right to complain about that dumbassery until my dying breath

(Anonymous) 2015-03-27 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, every shipper is like that. Slash and het alike.
They make it seem like their crack pair making eye contact is the most significant event in the world.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-27 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
It always seems like a ridiculous thing to get stressed over. Complaining about fetishization, when the only people getting fetishized are fictional characters who literally cannot give a fuck. Nobody has a problem imposing their trans/autistic/asexual/hogwarts house sorting or whatever other headcanons onto said fictional characters.

If these were actual people that would might feel angry or awkward about how people are portraying them then it would be worth the fight. But most of the time it's just fictional characters. Unless the creator of characters says something about being uncomfortable about how their characters are being protrayed, then people are free to write what they want. Stop thinking that fighting your battles over fictional characters is going to change anything in the real world. INB4 something something vacuum. Unless your the type of person who thinks video games are to blame for turning people violent rather than the people just being bad seeds, then just sit down and take a breather.

Speaking of fetishization, it's not even an exclusively slash pairing issue. I've seen female characters who are canonically the same height as a male characters suddenly get drawn with a massive height difference to make the female seem more weak and fragile. Or how the male is always more dominant and sexually experienced and the girl is a shy virgin. What about female characters who are canonically buff but slimmed down a lot for fanart? Or how the female is never allowed to be stronger than her male counterpart? Or how the female always has to fawn over how attractive the guy is? Or female reduced down to love interest and nothing more? I wonder if this bothers people as much? Probably not. It's funny (in a sad way) how this kind of stuff is tolerated as normal behavior in hetero pairs and only becomes an issue to shame slash shippers with. As if same sex relationships are the only ones that are expected to have both people be equals, but it's perfectly normal for the woman to be the lesser part in a hetero relationship.

TBH, het shipping pisses me off more than slash shipping. People who exclusive ship hetero ships always make me feel uncomfortable. Just a couple days ago I saw an artist say she never wants to draw two guys together (even in a platonic way) because then people would expect her to draw "gay stuff". She also said she likes drawing girls smaller and weaker because she likes the girls to be submissive. Even though the female characters she draws are supposed to be pretty fit and stronger than most guys. This type of stuff is common in exclusive het shippers. I know everyone has the right to their tastes, but it just makes me cringe.
