I think there's some degree of truth to that, but I'm not there's as much as you'd think. But ultimately, yes, I do think that most people are more or less the same & I think my tastes in fanfiction are pretty well the same as the tastes of female slash fans, with the polarity flipped.

First, I think there is an extent to which men don't show up in fandom (or at least the subset of fandom that we're really talking about here) because it's female-dominated, but I don't think it's for the reason you might expect. I don't think it's necessarily a misogyny thing or anything like that. It's just that you're unlikely to encounter the kinds of practices as something that you would like to do. It's just a little harder to fall into. Like, the spaces are just a little less familiar, a little less comfortable, work under slightly different rules and expectations, and provide kinds of appeal that you just aren't accustomed to being offered.

Second, I'm not sure how much you actually can generalize these things. It's really hard to trace what's due to cultural conditioning & what's not. But I do feel like this kind of thing, and the taste for femslash (as opposed to lesbian porn), is not particularly common for dudes. I've certainly felt like an oddball about it. I've also found that men writing the stuff (at least, those who affirmatively identify as men, and I may be generalizing from a few particularly bad examples) tend to be pretty fucking bad at it.

So I don't know. It's tough to say.
