I liked it. Athelstan all season was growing into someone I wanted to smack and yell, "What the hell is wrong with you?!!!" He was nothing like he was in the first season. Who I loved. And I don't mind characters changing and growing over the course of a show but to go from a innocent, devote monk to a sleeps with a married woman and leave like she's nothing, violent, faith gone down the tubes wannabe Viking was too much for me. When Ragnar has a stronger Christian faith than the monk, something is wrong here.

So, I guess that's why it didn't hurt when Athelstan died. I am glad he was born again in the end. I kind of wished he had died with him having given himself his old monk hairstyle. Though I like the fact that he has never forgotten his Latin.

But I love the final scene with him and Floki. The two men represented the difference in their religions so well. Christianity for Athelstan is about submission. You submit to Christ. You submit to dying for Him if God wills it. You submit to non-violence. (Which why Judith yelling, "This isn't what Jesus would do," is so chilling while she was having her ear cut off.) While the Northman religion is all about dominance. You fight for honor. You fight for a right to sit at the table with Odin. To submit means that when you will die the Valkyries will not come and take you to Valhalla.

So, in that scene Athelstan is doing EXACTLY what a Christian would do, submitting to his fate while Floki is going EXACTLY what a Northman would do, dominating the scene.

And I don't hate Floki, unlike some fans. He has always been the most devoted out of all the Northman. It's just the environment has changed. Christianity is creeping in and making a threat on not just his beliefs but his culture. He had to react. Not doing so would have been out of character.

I don't hate Floki, but I've been liking him a little less with each passing season. I also agree with you about Athelstan though, but it still hurt for me when he died. Part of it was probably because Ragnar was so heart broken over it.

And I think that's a good analysis for both of the characters. It would have been very strange if Floki had just walked away, but I wish the confrontation had been a little less, er, murdery. I'm almost kind o dreading what happens to Floki eventually because of it because the dude is probably going to get fucked up
