Some of us men who like slash like it for those reasons. Which are the same reasons that women like it. Idealistic unrealistic romance and sex is fun, I think all slash fans would agree.

What it all comes down to is men and women generally liking different things.

For instance, I have only once liked a gay romance story written by a woman, and a big part of that is the woman being a friend of mine. Otherwise, I find slash fic to be borderline offensive but, more realistically, it's just not for me.

But when I read gay fuck fic? YES. Dirty, raunchy, MASCULINE. That's what I like. However, it goes without saying that there are plenty of gay men who don't like that stuff and happilly enjoy woman-written gay stories. And there are other gay dudes who don't like either and like a third or fourth avenue of gay fic. And some find it all to be garbage.

What kind of slash written by women do you read that it's all schmoopy unrealistic romance shit? Most of the slash I read is every bit as filthy and raunchy as mainstream pornography (made by men for men), even though it's written by women. I find the idea that men would somehow write "dirtier" fic than women really weird.

NAYRT, but I'm going to presume this is fandom-specific. I've seen a lot of schmoopy unrealistic romance slash fic in the past. But when I branched out to different fandoms, others had more of the hardcore stuff. I don't think it's necessarily coming down to different writing styles of men vs women. Sometimes, individual fandoms can have a prevailing trope - just depends on where you're reading.
