Oh look, a bunch of hostile people are denying ableism exists in fandom.

Next they'll wonder why no disabled people feel up to debating it.

Here's a clue: because we're sick of living with ableism every day, many of us are struggling to manage to live at all, and this blatant denial is triggering enough in itself.

FWIW, I know you weren't. Unfortunately people took what you asked as an affront.

I mean, I have disabilities and while I've noticed ableism at the hands of some fans, it's mostly stuff like the use of the R-word, and even that one was a looong time ago.

Er, frankly, I see more ableism on the news and non-fandom blogs than I do in fandom. Old school fandom in particular is good about being cool with things, whether it be a learning disability, mental illness, chronic pain and/or exhaustion, mobility issues, or the joke that is public support for the disabled.

Most of the actual calling-out of ableism I see on Tumblr (and how I miss LJ sometimes) is poorly aimed, and telling us we have dynamics rather than disorders, or that we shouldn't call ourselves crazy or lame. It avoids or ignores the real issues in favor of criticizing us for not being noble martyr stereotypes.

For the record, I'm legally disabled, with both mental and physical issues, including lifelong chronic pain. In fact, my pain levels are so high that I once broke my spine, thought I'd pulled a muscle, and walked away. As a result of that stunt, I now walk with a cane. I get this shit. Equally, I know when I'm being defended, and when I'm being spoken down to.

By the way, most disabled people I know have really gallows senses of humor about it. We joke about what to do with our corpses, FFS. We're not delicate little flowers, about to disintegrate to the wind. You need a pretty tough hide to wake up like this day in and day out. If we don't comment, it's not due to weakness. It's because the issue isn't worth our energy.

And with that, I am bowing out of this discussion.
