Best example is someone acting like they know what's good for disabled people but when an actual disabled person says "uh, that doesn't really work for me/I don't agree with that" they're talked down to. "Your experience isn't everyone else's experience!" No fucking shit, stop pigeonholing us assbag. Or worse we're told we're not "really" disabled. Or not disabled enough to qualify for their grand one size fits all treatment of disabled people.

That's part of what I don't understand about SJ movements, tbh. "Disabled people" as a group are so diverse with so many different kinds of people and lives just like "People of Color" as a group have extremely different experiences as well depending on what "color" they are or what culture they come from. But we/they get completely washed together.

Tbh I wasn't sure what OP was talking about and still am not, ableism in fandom or ableism in fandom social justice circles by people claiming to be anti-ableist... but I'll agree with you on that point.

DA

SJWs are the real oppressors. That's all you really need to know.

Yup. I remember when the movie Avatar came out (blue cat people). Leaving aside the other issues, there was a big argument in the disability community over it. There were people who felt that the MC should have embraced his disability and that it was offensive to disabled people that he was struggling. This mostly came from people who were born disabled, or became disabled at a very early age. The part of the community that became disabled later in life, myself included, were very WTF and thought that it was entirely realistic that the character was still struggling -- because he'd only become disabled and a wheelchair user SIX MONTHS before the start of the movie. Of COURSE he wasn't going to be "rah rah disability is my identity!". I was diagnosed with multiple chronic illnesses between 19-23 (and then more later on), and five years on I was STILL struggling with what I could no longer do. (I am not touching the magic healing at the end; that's a whole 'nother matter.)

The SJWs, however, latched onto the "this character is offensive to PWDs" thing, and were all over the goddamn place with it. Usually secondarily to the racial issues in the movie, but I still saw it come up and actual PWDs get attacked for liking and emphasizing with the depiction of the character. And when we said, effectively, butt the fuck out because you're not even disabled and have no fucking idea what you're talking about, we would get accused of "internalized ableism." It was and is as condescending and patronizing as fuck.

THAT right there is ableism in fandom.

I can't stand people with this attitude. Believe it or not, not all disabled people are happy being disabled! There are many of us who, if offered a cure for our disability, would take it without a second thought. That doesn't make us traitors or anything like that, it just means we have a different outlook on things. And that's FINE.

Precisely. I'm in the "if there were a cure, I'D TAKE IT IN A SECOND" camp, at least for my physical disabilities. I would LOVE to be free of chronic pain.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-29 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Are there seriously people out there who are like "NO! I'm proud of my chronic pain!! It's part of my identity!"??? What kind of masochistic bullshit is that?

I have rheumatoid arthritis. Nobody wants rheumatoid arthritis. I call bullshit on anyone who claims they would not take a cure if they were offered. I just don't believe it.

I know at least one person who is, yes. I don't get it either.

I see that attitude you mentioned in your first paragraph a lot in the deaf community. I don't understand it, and I've been deaf since birth. Why would I want to embrace my disability when it's been nothing but a curse? It's more or less ruined my life. I can't tell you how many opportunities are closed to me simply because I have to wear a hearing aid.

Yeah, I've definitely heard of it a LOT in the Deaf community, so I'm not surprised to hear you say this. I know how many doors have been closed to me because of chronic pain; it's hard to keep a job when you're running at a baseline pain level of 7 (out of 10), which was the case for years and years. (This has recently changed; apparently, living with my ex was causing a lot more baseline stress than I realized, and I've been able to get below a 5 for the first time in literally ten years... the length of my relationship with said ex... now that I'm in a much more supportive environment. I'm hoping it'll be enough I can work, but we'll see. *crosses fingers*) But still... it's something that if offered a cure I would jump at in a hot freaking second, and oh the rage I have for the people who would judge me for that is unspeakable.
