IMO Steve and Catherine's relationship was much more believable when they kept it as a friends-with-benefits kind of thing. It worked, and it seemed like they were actually enjoying their time together. (There weren't any major feelings involved, and both were okay with the arrangement.)

Once they became a 'serious couple' the dynamic got weird because it suddenly seemed like Catherine was 100% all in, and Steve was trying to go through the motions but wasn't seriously invested. You saw that once in a while with their scenes together, where she's fed up with him. (There was a phone scene IIRC where he needed something, told her so and quickly hung up, and she was irritated about it. By that point Steve had done that kind of thing A LOT so she probably was used to being contacted mostly for favors, but she probably hoped some of that would change when they started dating.)
