Re: Is there such a thing as "Male Guilt" CW: Suicide
(Anonymous) 2015-03-28 01:46 am (UTC)(link)Obviously, a suicide attempt is its own thing and depression is its own thing. But I can't think of too many other contexts where you would look at someone who tried to commit suicide, and look at their stated reasons, and say "Oh, there's nothing there, they were just completely making it up." Maybe they weren't interpreting things personally, but I do think it's kinda delegitimizing.
Re: Is there such a thing as "Male Guilt" CW: Suicide
That being said, I find it hard to believe someone would contemplate suicide over "male guilt" if there wasn't already an underlying psychological issue.
But yeah, obviously that's speculation without him commenting here.
Re: Is there such a thing as "Male Guilt" CW: Suicide
(Anonymous) 2015-03-28 01:58 am (UTC)(link)Again, it's just super weird that we're working so hard to minimize this thing right here.
Re: Is there such a thing as "Male Guilt" CW: Suicide
My point is that reducing it to "male guilt" IS sort of minimizing it, in the sense that it makes it sound a bit silly while a suicide attempt actually is pretty damn serious shit.
I think it can certainly be an indicator to what sort of toxic environment he might have been in, but reducing it to that seems disgenuine, too.
Re: Is there such a thing as "Male Guilt" CW: Suicide
(Anonymous) 2015-03-28 02:09 am (UTC)(link)Like, if someone tried to commit suicide and said it was because they couldn't deal with their dysfunctional mother, I don't think most people's reactions would be, "Oh, well, maybe they felt bad about their mother, and of course sometimes when you're depressed very small things, like whatever her mother did, can seem like the straw that broke the camel's back."
Re: Is there such a thing as "Male Guilt" CW: Suicide
Obviously.
I just think that those feelings wouldn't have been as such if there wasn't already a problem, this was just the way it manifested...if that makes sense?
I think the situation with a dysfunctional mother is a bit different, in the sense that a dysfunctional parent can be actively abusive, and abuse does change things.
