(Anonymous) 2015-03-28 04:26 am (UTC)(link)I don't write as often as I'd like to, for a variety of reasons. The crippling depression is one thing, but others include the fact that my fics usually get a small number of likes and then fall into oblivion, and that I always worry that, as a guy trying to portray lesbians realistically and romantically, I'll just get lumped in with the guys writing about 76FFF breasts and dildos the size of your arm. I enjoy writing, but it never feels very rewarding for those reasons.
I've never specifically felt sidelined by fandom being a female-dominated space, but I did get my start back in the 90s in comic book and anime fandom, which were pretty male-dominated at the time, so that might have had something to do with it.
And these days, I occasionally wonder if women looking for stories to read find that stories written by other women click more with them. Nothing wrong with that, if that's the case, but it does tend to make me feel a little discouraged. But that's about the limit of any dissuasion I might feel. (And I more often attribute the lack of reaction to my own lack of skills, anyway.)

(Anonymous) 2015-03-28 06:24 am (UTC)(link)I doubt it's that you're male since, speaking for myself [and I strongly suspect this is fairly common], I never notice the author's gender unless I decide to go check out their lj/tumblr/whatever because I really enjoyed their writing. Like the other anon said, it's probably more to do with the way femslash just lacks popularity than anything else.
As for portraying them as realistic...As long as you don't make the portrayals all about sex/write it as a mostly normal relationship then you're probably fine. I can't speak for anyone else in the lgbt community but as long as the author makes it clear that the relationship isn't something super weird/different and not fetishy creepy I'm cool with it.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-28 06:42 am (UTC)(link)Well, it's not that I think they're seeing a male pen name or the like and saying, 'eww, boys, gross!' I just wonder if having an actual woman's perspective lends something to the writing that I lack, or helps the author resonate a bit more with a female audience. But I agree that the relatively low popularity of femslash is probably a big factor, too.
And I try to be respectful and realistic when it comes to writing femslash couples -- trust me, I've seen and rolled my eyes at enough blatantly-there-for-the-male-gaze situations to want to avoid them as much as I possibly can. A huge part of why I like writing femslash is that I like the actual character dynamics the characters in question have, and if I can't capture that, then it wouldn't appeal at all.
