(Anonymous) 2015-03-28 04:33 am (UTC)(link)The big difference now is that, with social media, it's so easy to link up with other people who share your ideas, reinforce them in a way that interacting with the outside world might not, and broadcast them loudly and ferociously without any fear of consequence. In, say, the 60s, if you wanted to protest nuclear weapons or support racial equality or call for an end to the Vietnam War, you had to coordinate with other local people, then go out to march or picket or whatever you were going to do, and maybe risk being arrested or hit by fire hoses, depending on where you lived. The difficulties involved in that probably turned some people off. Nowadays, when you can protest without leaving your bedroom, the threshold for getting involved is much lower.
