I don't like Twilight, but as a former fangirl of a fictional character, eh, teenagers often fall in love with some sort of idols Some just happen to be fictional.

...

Ignoring the meat of the secret, because you happened to hit a semi-obsession of mine....

Y'know, I love Leonard Cohen. A lot. To the point I actively resent Jeff Buckley, because of people's inexplicable love of his cover of Hallelujah. But his 'vocal development' is basically 'destroying his voice until it worked for his songs'. It worked quite well for him. But it's hardly a case of 'development', and certainly not something I'd want every artist to do.

I actually don't get the Cohen reference in the secret, but I know what you mean!
It's not so much as that he's brilliant at singing as at vocally interpreting his songs... feelings, life, everything. I'm glad I got to see him live when he was already quite old and I do like how his timbre deepened over the years, but I really love the older recordings.
And it also pisses me off how almost nobody knows Hallelujah is his song and not Jeff Buckley's, Alexandra Burke's and especially not the fucking "Shrek Song". Honestly!

Seriously! Cohen's 'Hallelujah' rules and Buckley's is pretty average.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-28 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
John Cale's version is really good and my favorite, but yeah Buckleys is average.

I really love Rufus Wainwright's cover, myself-- Jeff Buckley's is sort of... eh. I don't hate it. I've heard covers I really dislike, but Jeff Buckley's is just sort of... there.

I mean, I love Leonard Cohen, and I love listening to his originals, but I feel like Rufus Wainwright does a really good job of covering them in a way that keeps the heart of it while having a different vocal style or a different feel. His 'Everybody Knows' cover is also great, I've been known to listen to it back-to-back with the original... The sound is different enough that it's not a pointless cover, but it doesn't replace the original in my heart, I just love having them both.

But yeah, as much as I love Leonard Cohen, I don't feel like he's someone anybody else needs to emulate.

What? This secret is so strange, the last part is almost cute but the rest is sort of rude and I don't even know what Leonard Cohen is doing in it?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-29 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Being a fucking boss. That's what Leonard Cohen is doing in the secret. Or anywhere else at any time. Being a fucking boss.

I learned a new word today! Strandkorb!

(Anonymous) 2015-03-28 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Wtf is 'strandkorbs'?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-28 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)

German word, literally means beach basket. It's basically a seat for people to sit in that's on the beach. Found a lot on the beaches along the North Sea and the Baltic (at least in Germany).

Gooooooooooooooooood MORNING, tar season!

(Anonymous) 2015-03-28 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
This is not tar season though, is it? I admit that actually was my first thought as well, but it doesn't mention any vegetables/food or references to agriculture, and do they even have beaches in tar season town?

Is it tar season, y/n?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-28 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
There are persuasive arguments both for and against it.

If tar season anon were a Leonard Cohen fan then I want to hole up in their cabbage hut even more. The music would be great.

Well, I don't think his having fangirls will hamper his work. If anything, their blind devotion to his sparkly alter-ego just might support his musical endeavors for a bit.

Also... I don't think you're in a position to be looking down on any of his other fangirls, OP. Beam in your own eye, and all that.

Am I just too tired or is the first part of this secret really, really disconnected from the second part?

Text: I think his Twilight fangirls are stupid bints and it’s mostly their fault that he will probably never attain the same level of songwriting and vocal development as someone like Leonard Cohen.

Last night I had a peculiar and enchanting dream about him.

I wish I could take him away to another universe that is almost, but not quite like our own.

As I’m not interested in sex, I probably wouldn’t even want to sleep with him.

But it would be really nice to take walks on weird and beautiful beaches and have epic cuddles in strandkorbs in our free time.

It's his fans' fault that he'll never write as well as Leonard Cohen? Okay, then. Whose fault is it that he'll never be as sexy as Leonard Cohen?

I'll admit, I'm kind of interested in seeing if he can escape "the Twilight phrase" in the long term, or whether he's stuck as "that guy from that fangirl movie" forever.

Um, I feel like I'm about the only person who thought this secret made sense (the first part), which is a little worrying.

I'm sorry. Leonard Cohen has "vocal development"? What?
