What's worse...

(Anonymous) 2015-03-28 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Being the guest who sleeps late, or the guest who wakes up early?

Alternatively, having a guest who is the type to sleep until noon, or having a guest who is awake at the crack of dawn?

And which of these are you?

Being the guest who wakes up early. Because what can you do with yourself? Do you think you have permission to make breakfast? Or watch television? Or use the computer? Yes, the host may be a friend or a family member but I still don't know the exact rules of their household because I don't live with them. What if the host has a certain way of cooking breakfast? What if they have a morning routine? And you just broke that. I'd rather wake up late and catch up than to throw off everyone's day by changing the routine first thing in the morning.

I love being the guest that wakes up early. I get whole hours just me and whatever books are in the house. It's bliss.:)

The guest who gets up early is the worst. They clump around, waking you up, getting in all your stuff when they make breakfast, while being all bright and cheerful when you emerge looking your worst. The guest who sleeps great is good, then you can get up and get your stuff together in peace and be ready for them with you being bright eyed and bushy tailed when they emerge bleary-eyed and all bedhead.

Oh nooo I'm definitely the sort to wake up earlier than everyone...but I'm totally fine with sitting and reading all morning so it doesn't bother me. When I was younger I'd always sleep over my friend's house and it would just be me and her mom in the morning eating breakfast and both reading our own books together. It was nice.

Yes! Same with me. And in one case, my friend lived in my neighborhood, so if I ran out of things to do while waiting, I'd just leave her a note telling her to come over or call if she wanted to hang out and go home.

I'm the same. That was also my vacations because I'm an early riser in a family full of people who love to sleep in. So we'd go away and I'd spend my mornings reading while they were sleeping and then we would finally go out and do something we couldn't do at home. I always made sure to pack enough books to get me through the week.

I'm totally the guest who wakes up at six the morning. I basically don't sleep in. At all. Never have. How awkward it is depends on where I'm staying, though; one of my friends' has a loft as a guest room, and I like it because I can put on my makeup, read, check my mail and everything else while she sleeps. But if I'm sharing a room with someone, it's awkward because they're inevitably the kind of people who'll wake up if you breathe too loudly, so I basically have to count sheep until either they wake up or it feels late enough that I'll only feel a little guilty if I wake them up.

As for what's worse, it's only awkward for me if we have somewhere to go, OR if the guests are supposed to leave that day and I have things I can't do until they do.

I'd rather have the guest who sleeps until noon, as I sleep until noon if I can.

Re: What's worse...

(Anonymous) 2015-03-28 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
This kind of depends on the host's own schedule, wouldn't it? If I'm staying with someone for a couple of days, I always try to mesh my hours with the household's.

The one exception was the winter break of my freshman year when I stayed with my host family. It was nearly a month in the dead of winter in rural Connecticut so I just... gave up and stayed up half the night and slept until noon. It didn't bother my host parents since they left for work early anyway and wouldn't see me again until dinner.

If you're close quarters and neither party can do anything until the other wakes up then I hate all the options.

But if everyone has a room or there is some sort of divide I don't care about either.

And I've been both types. The only time I consistently the one who wakes up late is when I visit family because I go into vacation mode and they all wake up early.

I'm the guest who wakes up at the crack of dawn. Knowing this, I always prepare myself by making sure I have plenty of books or my laptop so I can keep myself occupied in the mornings.

I always warn guests who stay at my house that my parents wake up crazy early and are super noisy, but that they're welcome to sleep until noon, which is when I'll wake them up for lunch. It really depends on why they're staying at the house.

I'm always the one who wakes up early, both being guest or host. It's okay on both counts, though, because as a host I have time to prepare, and as a guest I know the routines of the people I'm staying with and just adapt.

Re: What's worse...

(Anonymous) 2015-03-28 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Well it all depends on how I well know the person I'm staying at, what we did the night before and when we went to bed. If I crash at a friend's place after we've been out drinking (or someone stays at my house) and couldn't drive anymore or the last train was gone, we both sleep late of course.
Otherwise, I wouldn't sleep til noon, I'd set my alarm to something like 9 and then check if they're up yet. If they slept until noon, I'd keep quiet and read or something. Unless I got really hungry, then I'd look for food :D If I know them well enough to poke around in their kitchen.

As for people staying at my place - I wouldn't let them unless I'm comfortable with them waking up at whatever time they want to, and they can always help themselves to breakfast.. if they find something that is :D

I never really sleep well in a strange environment so I'm always the first up. Fortunately I'm also used to this so I can be exceedingly quiet when I need to be.

I tend to just make myself some tea and fold up whatever bedclothes I used. Maybe do a bit of light cleaning before everyone else gets up.

I'd rather have the guest sleep in until noon. Because I like sleeping in too. And if I got up earlier, nice to have a little time to myself to get myself and things ready.

Re: What's worse...

I am the guest who sleeps late. I've spent my entire life fighting to be able to get up before noon off my own bat, and I've never succeeded. My parents used to tell people I was born noctural: I never sleep before at least 2am, even if I have to get up in the morning. I can do it for work and/or school, because I have to, and I'll catch up the hours on the weekend, but if I'm on holiday? We'd have to be physically travelling somewhere for me to manage it.

With that in mind, I'd prefer a guest who also sleeps late, so I don't feel like I'm chronically abandoning them and letting them down in the mornings.

Early-risers are worse for me because I'm a late-riser myself and I always feel a bit guilty when I'm not up but my guest is. Thankfully most of my friends are good at keeping themselves busy with a tablet and the internet, plus I always try to be up earlier for them when they're visiting.

When having guests, I always try to get up before them to prepare breakfast. When being a guest, I try to read/occupy myself on my phone until the host is awake (unless I have permission to prepare breakfast, then I go and do that. But I don't mess with other people's kitchens without invitation).

(Depending on the situation of course, but)I think it's kind of rude to sleep super long, both as a guest and as the host. Because then everyone has to wait for you. I don't mind my guests sleeping long because I can occupy myself in my own home, but I have this friend who sleeps very deeply and very long and she invited our group of friends over a few times and then everyone was sitting around in the morning waiting for her to finally get up. And eating breakfast without the host in their own home is pretty rude as well, so ... eh.

Being the guest who wakes up early is a lot easier to handle when you have the internet in your pocket.

I kind of have been both guests at different times of my life. When I was younger, my mother would want to visit her mother every weekend, and that means packing up while I was at swimming classes and picking me up right after.

Thing is, I was always so sleepy and tired after swim class that I often end up sleeping in the car and wake up later at 2 a.m. in the middle of the night at the grandmother's place. On top of that, due to me skipping dinner I was always hungry when this happens.

After my midnight supper I then try to sleep, and I've been both the person who wakes up early and the person who wakes up late due to the now messed up body clock cycle, depending on the particular trip.

If I have to pick though, I'd much prefer the late riser than the early one, partly due to me having the chance to sleep all night and morning nowadays.

Which I am depends, though I try not to come out of the room until a reasonable time, and I try to be up at a reasonable time [so, basically, stay in the room until 6 am and be up and out by 8:30 at the latest] since...yeah. I'm not comfortable digging through other people's stuff to get breakfast, risking waking them up, etc.

When people stay with me...Well, tbh? I prefer they have a hotel room. Avoids the whole issue that way. But if they have to stay with me, I'd rather they get up late. I tend to have a bit of a weird schedule so when I get up tends to be a bit random at home...and I'm pretty grumpy when I first wake up. So I'd like to get that out of the way before dealing with anyone.

I'm always, always, always the guest who wakes up at the crack of dawn, and I honestly prefer being that way.

I can occupy myself for a couple hours, and I'd rather do that than be a useless lump sleeping in.

Guest who wakes up early because you have to wait 'til the person who invited you over wakes up.
