It's funny because for me it's the opposite -- I had so many issues with my Middle-Eastern dad. Part of the problem is how he can be sexist. It was so fucking painful to read A Thousand Splendid Suns and see the villain of that story -- Rasheed's -- mindset reflected in my dad.

Now, I should clarify that my dad wasn't anywhere NEAR as abusive as Rasheed. But he was very verbally abusive to my sister. And he also lets my little brother get away with so much more than he would ever have let us get away with.

There's also the fact that my dad -- as the head male of the house -- expects everyone to cater to him and if he's not happy, then NO ONE is allowed to be happy. He's ruined more than one birthday because of that....

That sucks. :(
And yes, I think it's a version of the 'noble savage' trope, to always cast the bad side of the family as the white side, and the good side the non-white side.
