Re: Confession thread

I agree with this sentiment so fucking much. In my experience, more often than not I see people younger eventually stop being excited about their ideas because of the way certain people in a community tend to act. Re: Complain, complain, complain. It's damn stressful.

So those who are young just stop talking about the idea they have. In my major, one of the biggest things is critiquing others people's work and a professor I've known for a long time stated that one of the hardest thing is getting her students to open up about their ideas because a lot of them are embarrassed or ashamed at what they perceive is dumb.

I dont know, maybe I'm just overprotective or something. Fandom should be fun.

Oh I agree completely.

Between the whole "Your character might be a Sue if.." stuff or the "don't use any of these tropes because.." stuff. Or the "that's problematic stuff" and all that stuff, the internet is really good at making people feel unsure about their work. And not in a "I might have to look at this and try better way" but more the "this is stupid , why do I even try" sort of way.

I hate how there are so many critics whose aim is to stomp out any confidence or enthusiasm a person might have (or claim it is "ego" that needs to be crushed)

I've seen people claim that an artist or writer isn't truly one until they break them" and I just thought that was so fucked up.

Fandom should be fun. It shouldn't be about "you're not doing fandom RIGHT" and making a bunch of rules.

I don't think keeping kids off the internet is that overprotective, especially with how the internet can be today. Consider how many "kill yourself" trolls we get. Imagine if a youngster ran into one of those. Scary.

Took the words right out of my mouth. I hate it when people do that others, especially with those who are younger or have less experience. The whole stamping out any joy or enthusiasm some people strive to do makes me want to break my fucking keyboard in half. Communities should encourage younger or less experienced people, not break them. What the fuck do people get out of making things less fun for other people.

I remember talking with someone who's majoring with media and communications and they expressed the same sentiment. That they don't think kids should have such easy access to the Internet and the attitudes of certain people in fandom communities will only add to stressful situations.

Yeah. Honestly as long as some people have that whole attitude of "it's the internet and I'm entitled to say whatever I want to whoever I want because they're on the internet" then I wouldn't feel safe letting kids on it.
