Trying to find a more concise term for a trope...

[identity profile] ioanite.livejournal.com 2015-03-28 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a particular trope in books and movies that I HATE, and would really love to just have a nice, quick shorthand that I could use in discussions instead of having to describe it whenever it comes up. I'm betting it's on TV Tropes, but I wouldn't know how to begin looking for it. If someone knows how to look, I'd be incredibly grateful.

The trope in question; when a character gets repeatedly dumped on by the story, with very little in the way of bright spots. People turn against them and refuse to listen to them, they receive out of proportion punishments, or things they care about are lost or taken away. It's as if the universe has decided that he/she will be the punching bag for the day, and there is NOTHING they can do about it.

Best examples; it crops up no less than THREE times in the Harry Potter books. Once when everyone suspects Harry of being the Heir of Slytherin, once when everyone thinks he rigged the goblet of fire, and basically the entire first half of "Order of the Phoenix", before he decides to found Dumbledore's Army.

This trope is probably my biggest squick in fiction, so knowing the shorthand would really come in handy (plus, a TV tropes page would give me some idea of what media to avoid).

I think maybe the "Butt Monkey" trope might fit?

Do you mean the Butt Monkey? http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ButtMonkey

Born Unlucky works too. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BornUnlucky

Maybe this one. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DeusAngstMachina

Might want to take a look at the loser archetype main page as well! http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LoserArchetype

buttmonkey probably fits with the description you gave, but it doesn't quite fit with the example you gave. with that specific example, "cassandra truth" would probably fit better because those last two instances you give are examples of times when harry was telling the truth about something and people refused to believe him and shunned him for it

The one that came to mind for me was (turning a character into a ) Woobie, which is a fairly broad term that has lots of sub-tropes; if look it up you might find something more specific to fit what you're talking about.

Butt Monkey and Chew Toy are your best bet.

Thanks, Guys!

I took a look through the suggested tropes, and I think "Trauma Conga Line" is probably the closest to what I'm looking for. Thanks for your help!
