I think that camp and humour is harder to get right than serious stuff, so maybe that's why it's less appreciated. Maybe 'get right' is the wrong phrase, maybe 'more personal'? I don't know how to describe it, but I know that me, my husband, and a lot of my friends watch the same or similar serious shows, but our "fun" shows are quite different.

I think it's harder to get campy, ridiculous stuff to the point of being average than it is serious stuff. It's hard to do anything really well, but being acceptable seems easier with serious stuff.

and also, as you say, taste might matter more with ridiculous stuff.
