I'll never understand why so many teenage nerds have such a terror of the possibility that someone, somewhere, might not be taking them totally seriously. I'll also never understand why they think that picking holes in something makes them look clever and not just spiteful and snidey.

Grow up, stop trying to look mature.

Well, that's pretty much it. They *want* to be grown up but lack the maturity to understand what it really is to be "grown up".

Um, it's because they're teenagers. They're NOT grown up and they're NOT mature. They're still kids. But they're at the point in development where they're starting to make their own identities and separate themselves from their parents, so they do a lot of wonky things to try to prove themselves.
