but they enjoyed it??? i mean, if something thought my fic was dumb but they enjoyed it? i'd be fine with that (because most of my fics are dumb as shit, but i hope someone out there finds them fun to read.)

I honestly think it depends on the author, different people would have different reactions to knowing their fic was enjoyed for all the wrong reasons. I personally would love it if someone found one of my fanworks to be so-bad-it's-good and got a laugh over it, because at least they enjoyed it. But I'm sure other people would be hurt if they knew.

which is why you'd be generic with your praise. "this was a really fun read," for example.

the author would have no way of knowing so I guess there's no real harm done, but I really hate the idea of someone leaving me praise when they were actually mocking my fic, so i wouldn't do that to someone else. they might be the kind of person who would get a kick out of it, or they might be the kind of person who'd find it hurtful. you just don't know.

I feel the same way. I mean, I take my fanfic way too seriously, but I also post my works publicly to share. If I'd made someone laugh from sheer dreadfulness, that's okay in my book. I ended up brightening their day, even if it wasn't in the way I was going for. :p
