Agreed, came here to say this.

It's unfortunate that a beloved show had to end because of one guy being a gigantic douchebag. Which he was, and the show ending is his fault. Still feel bad for the fans who liked the show who aren't defending him.

The thing is that, at least from an outside perspective, it looks like the fact that Clarkson is a huge douchebag is like 80% if the reason that people watch the show

That doesn't mean they follow him outside the show, though

IDK maybe it's an America vs UK thing. But I think it would be safe to say most of the US people assume a large degree of "acting" - because with US shows, most of the time they aren't wrong

Then we all watch Simon Cowell for his douchebaggery on Idol but we've no idea if that's an act or not. We love watching Gordon Ramsay yell at people, but how many of us know how he is off screen?

Hell, we keep up with the kardashians over here.

Without getting into the weeds of a serious argument here, the attitude that I've seen from Top Gear fans seems qualitatively different from what you're talking about. Much less detached insane soap opera, much more vicarious folk hero.

Oh he got him his food, and on time too, just the hotel's kitchen closed because the shoot ran long (which sounds like matter out of the producer's control) and it had to be a cold salad rather than steak. That must have been horrible.
