SGU's main flaw, I think, was that it didn't go bold enough. The communication stones and cameos from SG-1 and SGA did it no favors, partly because everybody only focused on the grossness of having sex while possessing somebody else's body, and partly because it was a constant reminder of the series that people didn't want to end.

Granted, if you take that away, you're left with being seen as Stargate: Voyager, but I think that would have been an easier stigma to overcome.

SGU at least had the benefit of having different problematic things. The race issues that showed up in SG1 and SGA were much reduced.

SGU's main flaw was having horrible, stupid, people as characters, and it's second biggest flaw was shooting in fucking shaky cam. You could see just how hard they wanted it to be Battlestar. If they'd had likeable people as characters, who weren't fighting for little-to-know reason other than the script saying so, and shot it in a standard camera set up, then it would have worked.

I never watched the other shows so I couldn't work out why SGU kept including stuff from storylines that were massively less interesting and not being confident of its own style. When it did that, it was 100% better. The stones thing was a mess.
