Yes, you love grimdark, if it is grimdark it must be good. Especially if fans of something else don't like it because they you are an edgey loner who is better than them. Sorry dude, it failed on every level and the only thing wrong was that it wasn't canned sooner.

Eh, I like lots of things. I loved the campiness of SGA and the darkness of SGU.
SG1, however, managed to change my mind about Richard Dean Anderson, who I loved so much as McGuyver and hated soo much as O'Neill. When people complain about SGU as "not being Stargate", my mind boggles, because SG1 took a 90 degree turn from the movie and was not what I thought of Stargate being when it first aired.

SGU was absolutely terrible and there's a reason it did poorly. The characters were unlikable and the show did away with everything "Stargate" that most people loved. They tried doing the "dark and edgy" but couldn't pull it off, and then they turned around and blamed the fans they insulted for the reason for the show's failure.

Tip: Don't tell fans you "don't need them" and "the fans of SGA aren't big enough in number to have any influence on how SGU does", then beg them to watch and blame them when they don't.

SG1 and SGA was fun and interesting. They managed to last for multiple seasons on their own merits. SGU was guaranteed two seasons (aka wasn't continued past s1 on its own merits) and killed the franchise.

I couldn't bear more than a couple of episodes of SG1 and SGA but loved SGU so it's almost like people have different tastes or something? (If it failed on *every* level shouldn't it have only had one season?)

(Anonymous) 2015-03-31 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
If I'm ranking my Stargate loves, in descending order, it goes like this:

1) SGU (for a variety of reasons including nostalgia for Blake's 7, love of Bobby Carlyle, fondness for crazy people, and enjoyment of a 'stranded far from home' plot that actually stayed the course)
2) SG1 (I actually don't remember a lot of it, it was the first I watched and only sporadically, but what I remember is good)
3) SGA (I hated John Sheppard, I was disappointed that they didn't stay stranded, for some reason the episode 'Inferno' killed a lot of my love, I didn't like a lot of their interactions with Pegasus, and aside from Zelenka, Ronon and Teyla -in that order- I kind of wasn't really fond of anybody)

Make of that what you will.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-01 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I don't make anything of it other than I have the COMPLETE opposite tastes than you do! SGA>SG1>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>SGU.
And John is my favorite character in all of fiction. :P

SGU's main flaw, I think, was that it didn't go bold enough. The communication stones and cameos from SG-1 and SGA did it no favors, partly because everybody only focused on the grossness of having sex while possessing somebody else's body, and partly because it was a constant reminder of the series that people didn't want to end.

Granted, if you take that away, you're left with being seen as Stargate: Voyager, but I think that would have been an easier stigma to overcome.

My ranking is:
1. SG1 seasons 1-8
2. Atlantis seasons 1-3
3. SG1 seasons 9-10
4. Atlantis 4-5 Only slightly better than SGU.
5. SGU. Sorry. Really didn't like it. It was not a Stargate show to me.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-31 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, didn't like SGU or most of SGA for that matter. Hated the Wraith.

Order of preference:
1. SG-1 seasons 1-3
2. SG-1 seasons 9-10
3. SGA seasons 1-3
4. SG-1 seasons 4-8 slightly better than
5. SGA 4-5 slightly better than.
6. SGU, which I still haven't succeeded in even finishing after several attempts.

SGU forever! Such wonderful characters. SG1 is a good choice when channel surfing, tbh I find SGA boring so far (season 3-ish).

-shrugs- Each to their own. Personally I didn't like since what I saw didn't feel like a Stargate show to me - and, honestly? What I heard after I stopped watching was that, basically, it was mostly body switching that...sounds really boring to me.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-01 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
It may be quite unfortunate the amount of hatred I still carry in my soul for Stargate Universe. It burns.....
SGA was my favorite series of all time and when it was cancelled the only fandom I ever truly loved began to wither away. And so with each site closure, each fic challenge retired and each memory fading I despise SGU more.

I do believe if I catalogued the happiest moments in my life thus far, the cancellation of SGU would be up there in the top 10. Top 5 if I'm honest.

I love SG-1 and SGA pretty equally, they've both got things I liked and disliked, but SGU never managed to grab me. One of the issues for me was that I didn't like a single character, they were all awful and I could not give a shit about any of them living. If had liked one of them I might have been able to stick it out, but sadly that wasn't the case.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-01 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
I think Stargate Universe could have been interesting in the hands of better writers, the problem is the Stargate people were too used to doing Sg-1 and SGA and then they all saw Battlestar and lost their minds thinking they could write dark when in reality they struggled with it.

They really weren't good at writing unlikable characters while still keeping them interesting. I can deal with unlikable characters but they have to be supported by a good plot. Eli was probably one of the better characters just because he was meant to be somewhat likable.

There was just too much working against the show in general in any case, I'm sorry you didn't get more of a show you liked OP. Even though I did not like Universe I am kind of sad the franchise basically ended after it did.

Image: screen cap from Stargate Univese, of Eli (?) standing in an alieny-y corridor

Text: Unthinkable in a fandom that worships SG1, but SGA was better and Universe was not only good TV, but good sci-fi. I am forever bitter that it doesn’t get more love.

Secret: The last episode made me cry :( I wanna know that Eli is okay!

(Anonymous) 2015-04-01 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
I never watched the original SG1 or SGA, but I decided to try SGU because I had liked BSG and felt in the mood for more hard sci-fi. It was awful. It was beyond awful. There were so many problems with so many things from characterization to world building to plot. Granted I only watched a handful of episodes before I gave up, but you couldn't pay me enough to get me to watch again. Sorry.

Reading the comments on this thread made me want to watch the show just to see what the deal is. I like both SG1 and SGA, though I haven't finished the shows yet (someday! someday I'll finish them). I've actually never really heard of SGU until this secret... like I thought another show existed but I never heard anyone talk about it until now.

I'm surprised at all the negative comments this secret/SGU got. While I liked SGA a lot, SGU was my favorite by far. I was very sorry that it didn't last longer.

YES.
I loved SG:U. I loved them having caffeine withdrawls and hating each other and running out of food and almost-mutiny and ALL OF IT.

Well, all but the 'borrowing a body to report back to earth' bit, that was stupid and horrifying. But yes!

I hope they do like mini-series some time to finish it and get them either somewhere good or home again.
(Sorry so late, but had to comment.)

I've always thought that SGU's main problem was that it was sold as a Stargate show when it really wasn't, and it would have done a lot better if it had been sold as a new sci-fi show.

Lol, as someone who wasn't in the Stargate fandom but watched SGU the absurd level of hatred seems to go so far beyond disliking the show into personally insulting viewers as if they individually cancelled SGA. It's hard to know which criticsm of the actual programme to take seriously when there's that sort of dialogue going on.

ANYWAY, the last episode annoyed me (they pulled the Rush and Eli stuff out of their ass) and the second season failed by trying too hard to be boring after people moaned about S1 but I'm sure Eli was ok, he could handle himself. :-P Idk if fic is your thing but have you read Force Over Distance? It's this massive story that acts as a 3rd season and conclusion to the show. It is slash but it features all the characters.
