It's apparently trigger-worthy now

(Anonymous) 2015-04-01 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
A post appeared on my dash promising a "safe space" from April Foolery. 50,000 notes and counting. Thought for a moment that was itself a joke, but that's asking too much from Tumblr.

If that post is the one I think it is, all someone means by reblogging it is that they won't be posting things like screamers or pulling potentially cruel pranks like pretending to have died or trying to convince a friend that they don't actually know each other or something.

The usage of safe space is incorrect, but I really don't see how it's ridiculous to inform your followers that you won't be pulling any intentionally cruel pranks on April Fools'.

If you don't plan to do it, just don't do it. Proceed as usual. Announcing it and explicitly labeling the act as providing a safe space is patently ridiculous.

I already said that the usage of safe space in that post isn't correct. I just still don't see how announcing it is ridiculous. Unnecessary, perhaps, but hardly batshit. People give their followers a heads up on tons of things. They announce when they'll be running on a queue, when they'll be unable to answer messages, when they'll be liveblogging something, what their spoiler tags are... "I'm not going to post any screamers on April Fools' Day, don't worry!" just doesn't seem that weird, sorry.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-01 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Because it is literally the announcement of a non-event. Liveblogging, spoilers, and radio silence can all affect followers. The lack of something won't, unless they were actively expecting it to be there.

Some people do expect that something to be there though? Have you never avoided looking at a website because you knew there was an event going on that would irritate you?

Honestly, it kinda sounds like you're just reaching for another reason to mock Tumblr. There are plenty of reasons out there already. Not every little thing that happens on Tumblr does is worth clutching your pearls over.

That's rich! Ha!

Uhhh, okay...?

Re: It's apparently trigger-worthy now

(Anonymous) 2015-04-01 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
If you want to be that pedantic about it, then yes, the announcement is merely unnecessary. Associating it with safe spaces is the part that makes it ridiculous. In this instance, they go hand in hand.

Maybe so people won't be afraid to look at videos or gifs or to click links posted on that person's blog that day?

I'm sure it's not a joke in the sense of completely satire, but I would wager most people probably aren't seriously claiming April fools as trauma or w/e

Ha. Did you see the post about how Weather.com had April replaced with May? And was warning people it could trigger them?

Yes! Fantastic.

I thought you were better than this. I have panic attacks over things like this. No it doesn't always happen and yes I take medicine and yes I'm fine going outside because when you have reactions you can't help, you learn to live without worrying about them every second. But what's so wrong with a warning? Why is seeing something that doesn't apply to you so offensive? If it doesn't affect you, WONDERFUL, you can ignore it.

If skin, motion, or space trigger you, you should not be on the internet for your own mental health. Those are not things you can avoid.

Some of these have also been "debunked" by people with the phobias. Such as people on Tumblr tagging EVERYTHING with eyes as "scocophobia".

People who actually have scocophobia have said that tagging everything does way more harm than good. Because instead of actually avoiding things that trigger them, they have to check because Tumblr thinks anything with eyes is triggering.

Because some people do make me wonder how the hell they even make it out the bed of they are that affected. In that case? Go get some fucking help. Don't expect the internet to cater to you.

go back to tumblr for your asspats

I really wish you would've used a warning about using all caps. I know for some people it's just a joke but all caps can be construed as yelling and for some of us with backgrounds of emotional abuse who get panic attacks, it's very triggering.

just so you know, it's a warning post from last year's april's fools prank (with the most boring inspirational video ever), the funniest thing being that the OP was serious about it
