Oh this was me, I was logged out for some reason! But ok man I just love Nami so much, I feel she's just an integral part of the straw hat dynamic. One thing I really enjoy seeing is her sort of insecurity about her own abilities to fight--because she's obviously surrounded by these like monstrous superhuman fighters, and I think that gives her a lot of insecurity, but she learns to have faith in her own abilities. The climatact is so cool because it's a weapon that really only she can use, she might not be able to bend like rubber or chop steel in half, but she's the only one with this in-depth understanding of meteorology needed to work the climatact. I just think seeing the way she handles herself in dangerous situations is sooo interesting and I really miss her! And then just, she's greedy and materialistic and I'm glad those traits didn't just go away after the Arlong Park arc, but she's also proven time and time again that her friends are more important than any of that and I cry because of her friendships, omg her relationship with Usopp specifically is so important to me!! And don't even get me started on how her backstory is just all about women loving and supporting each other, flawed wonderful women, ugh I love Bellemere so much, I love Nami, thanks for making me emotional

Same for me, every woman with a name is either insanely ugly or is pure fanservice, there's no middle ground. I used to watch the show cuz I have a lot of friends who are into it, but I had to stop because the character designs pissed me off. A lot of people like to talk about how One Piece has such great female characters that I want to slap them for being unable to see how the series is actually just as sexist as every other shounen show, from what they say with their character designs.

Most major shounen female characters have hatedoms though. Nami actually has it better than Sakura or Orihime.

mte. Sakura is a trained combatant, yet she does fucking shit over the course of the series. Nami is underpowered compared to the other character, but she still keeps trying and actually does things.

(And I hate Orihime so much, I won't even talk about that waste of character)

Orihime makes me sad because she starts out so strong like they're going to have her do stuff... and then she doesn't. And she's a damsel for a whole freaking arc. Agh.

And Sakura... so many ups and downs. So many moments where she started being awesome and then she crashed and burned again and went back to bawling about how much she loved Sasuke. I just. So much disappoint.

I was a huge Nami fan pre-timeskip -- she was right up there with Usopp and Robin as my favorite members of the crew. Post-timeskip, though... Well, she's fallen victim to Oda's new sense of protectiveness. She's barely been allowed to do anything noteworthy at all. I mean, she's not as bad off as, say, Rebecca -- at least she gets to participate in battles occasionally -- but she's being kept out of the action as much as possible. (Heck, the last time she appeared at all was nearly a year and a half ago -- though Robin, who's been on the island the whole time, hasn't had it much better.)

I still think Nami's a great character, but Oda's using her terribly.

Yeah, when I compare Nami and Robin's current roles in the series to the badassery they got up to in pre-timeskip, it's pretty dismaying.
