They're the new gothic/emo AUs that were all over the place in the 90s. It's an easy, pat way for the writer to add drama and signal counterculture and people who don't fit in without addressing any actual subcultures or having to research much. Doesn't mean you want to be a hipster or like them.

huh, interesting. but how does it add drama, do you mind explaining? the hipster Aus I saw were all about the style and coffeshops.

Drama doesn't have to be plot drama. The goth/emo thing was about atmosphere, exactly like coffee shop aus. The former were dark and gloomy, the latter are quaint and quirky.

As soon as you hear coffee shop AU, you already set the mood, no writer work necessary.

And you just know at least one character will be so quirky they're misunderstood by the plebs. Exactly like 90s subcultures were just too grim and real for preps.

Oh God, quirky. When someone describes himself as quirky is when you know to flee.

+1

I actually have always thought writers in the 90s and early 00s secretly admired gothic/emo subculture as well, at least the superficial aspects.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Romanticized and idealized, maybe. Admired, doubtful. I don't think anyone wanted to be a real actual live goth.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Secret admiration is 90% romanticization.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
No, romanticization is romanticization. I can write about historical fantasy, but I sure as hell do not want to go live in an area with no indoor plumbing. Most people can tell the difference between fiction and reality.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
No, I meant in the sense of being a "secret admirer" of something. Like a crush. An attraction not based in reality but your idealized notion of the object of affection. That's why I specified "superficial aspects".

And let's be real, an appreciation for a lifestyle that is actually 100% attainable in real life is pretty different from a fantasy. One is maybe inconvenient but the other is basically impossible. You're really running away with your analogies there.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
No its really not incomparable. I think tattoos are cool if ideal and done well with amazing art on attractive people who look good... but im not going to get one. Nor do I want one. Its not because I think id look bad. Its because I dont have to want an aesthetic for myself that I find pleasing on other people from a distance. I appreciate stubble on hot guys for example but I sure af dont want any and I hate kissing people with it in real life
