(the terrible secret of contemporary culture is that hipster is a meaningless term)

HIPSTER: Oh, this is such and such. You've probably have never heard of them. They're obscure. (End of conversation.)
GEEK: Oh, this is such and such. You've probably have never heard of them. They're obscure. Which is why I have brought the entire set of DVDs, comic books, novels and movies featuring them. Oh, and let me tell you about their history. And do you read fanfic? I've got some great fanfic starring them. I'm going to have you read that as soon as we are done with everything else. I'm going to make you an expert.
Hipsters aren't geeks. They aren't obsessed in the way that geeks are. They couldn't care less if someone else listens to the same bands they do. In fact, they rather like having their bands remain non-mainstream. And, yes, there are geeks out there who hate when their fandoms go mainstream but not for the same reasons that hipsters do. Geeks are afraid that if their fandoms go mainstream they're going to change. It won't be the same thing they fell in love with. Hipsters don't want their stuff to go mainstream because being obscure is cool. Being mainstream is not. So, Geeks fear change. Hipsters want to remain cool.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 01:08 am (UTC)(link)Sometimes I feel like I'm called a hipster because I don't fit in, as if that's a style decision rather than being poor and awkward and enthusiastic about weird shit. Geek it is :)

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 01:12 am (UTC)(link)Hipsters are overly focused on being cool. And making sure everyone knows they *are* cool.
Geeks are overly focused on things they think are cool. And making sure everyone knows *of* it.
A geek will tell you all about the latest issue of generic comic and oh my god did you read what favorite superhero said!? Let him introduce you to his favoritest comic ever!
A hipster will tell you all the obscure comics he reads which gives him "cred" but assume you're not interested because they're too niche, which is the whole point.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 04:25 am (UTC)(link)Text: For all the scoffing geeks do about hipsters, it sure feels like y’all kind of want to BE them, given the sheer ubiquity of hipster!AUs in any given fandom. And I say this with some of my dearest friends in mind. Why can’t you just come out and say it?
