They're the new gothic/emo AUs that were all over the place in the 90s. It's an easy, pat way for the writer to add drama and signal counterculture and people who don't fit in without addressing any actual subcultures or having to research much. Doesn't mean you want to be a hipster or like them.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-02 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
huh, interesting. but how does it add drama, do you mind explaining? the hipster Aus I saw were all about the style and coffeshops.

I actually have always thought writers in the 90s and early 00s secretly admired gothic/emo subculture as well, at least the superficial aspects.

There is also a plethora of favorite characters as serial killers, I hope that doesn't mean writers want to be serial killers.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-02 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Who doesn't, deep down, secretly want to be a serial killer sometimes?

+1

It all makes sense once you understand the terrible secret of contemporary culture

(the terrible secret of contemporary culture is that hipster is a meaningless term)

I don't think anyone even knows what a hipster is anymore.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think anyone ever knew what a hipster was. There's a hilarious academic article out there somewhere, where they found that even the people others call hipsters just call other people hipsters instead. So you can love your indie music nobody's ever heard of, your art and movies nobody's seen, wear your ironic clothes and oversized glasses, etc., and still not be a hipster because no, somebody else is a hipster. In the article, it was related to this idea of authenticity, wherein "hipsters" were inauthentic people or putting on airs to be cool, so it became this really shifty label that gets applied only to people who aren't you, basically. I have never been able to forget this article. It's too funny.

ngl I wouldn't mind copping a lot of hipster fashion trends, but deep down I'd be be okay if someone called me a hipster because it would secretly flatter me. Dat scarf. Dat bag. Dat denim jacket. Dat facial hair.

I've lived in a hipster neighborhood and I know my share of geeks. The two aren't really alike. There is a fundamental difference between the two and it goes like this;

HIPSTER: Oh, this is such and such. You've probably have never heard of them. They're obscure. (End of conversation.)

GEEK: Oh, this is such and such. You've probably have never heard of them. They're obscure. Which is why I have brought the entire set of DVDs, comic books, novels and movies featuring them. Oh, and let me tell you about their history. And do you read fanfic? I've got some great fanfic starring them. I'm going to have you read that as soon as we are done with everything else. I'm going to make you an expert.

Hipsters aren't geeks. They aren't obsessed in the way that geeks are. They couldn't care less if someone else listens to the same bands they do. In fact, they rather like having their bands remain non-mainstream. And, yes, there are geeks out there who hate when their fandoms go mainstream but not for the same reasons that hipsters do. Geeks are afraid that if their fandoms go mainstream they're going to change. It won't be the same thing they fell in love with. Hipsters don't want their stuff to go mainstream because being obscure is cool. Being mainstream is not. So, Geeks fear change. Hipsters want to remain cool.

You described me. I guess I'm a geek.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I think 'geek' has come to refer to anyone into 'geek culture' which is full of hipsters. Of course the actual term is pretty broad too.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
This has never occurred to me before, but I like it!
Sometimes I feel like I'm called a hipster because I don't fit in, as if that's a style decision rather than being poor and awkward and enthusiastic about weird shit. Geek it is :)

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
It's simpler to me:

Hipsters are overly focused on being cool. And making sure everyone knows they *are* cool.

Geeks are overly focused on things they think are cool. And making sure everyone knows *of* it.

A geek will tell you all about the latest issue of generic comic and oh my god did you read what favorite superhero said!? Let him introduce you to his favoritest comic ever!

A hipster will tell you all the obscure comics he reads which gives him "cred" but assume you're not interested because they're too niche, which is the whole point.

In a few years you and those authors will realize neither of those words are particularly meaningful, and that they only apply if people work towards fitting the stereotypes.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Many people absolutely build their identities around these concepts, though, consciously or not.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
I think maybe you are underestimating the number of fic authors who are also hipsters.

And what about mafia!AUs, dystopia!AUs, serial killer!AUs, apocalypse!AUs, etc.?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Something can be interesting for someone to explore fictionally without them wanting to actually experience it. Seriously.

And, yes, that can go for coffee shop!AUs, college!AUs, FBI!AUs, bakery!AUs, and every other one you can think of (though I do assume that the majority of people have experienced high school or its equivalent - but wanting to explore a high school!AU doesn't necessarily mean they want to do it again).

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
...I thought dripping disdain on the whole concept of "hipster" was the main qualification for being a hipster

have I been doing hipster irony wrong all along

Are they ubiquitous now? I've hated the few I've seen. The combination of my favourite characters acting like people I know and dislike, and more drug use than usual. And no plot.
I guess your theory is as good as any?

Text: For all the scoffing geeks do about hipsters, it sure feels like y’all kind of want to BE them, given the sheer ubiquity of hipster!AUs in any given fandom. And I say this with some of my dearest friends in mind. Why can’t you just come out and say it?
