I half agree. I like the concept of democracy, and I feel it can and does work. But the problem is that in its current state it's far too prone to corruption.

I'm not so much cynical about any one political system. They all seem to have the same weakness: people. There are simply too many people that are stupid, selfish, assholish, or otherwise not someone I want to trust with making decisions for other people. Plenty of people are great, but there are enough to ruin anything good once they get their hands on it.

My thoughts exactly. You can create the most perfect political system imaginable (barring robots) and it will still be imperfect because of people.

We have thoughts, emotions, families, grudges, wants. We hate and we love and we care and we scorn and politicians are no different in that. IMO, so long as we are human, so long shall our political systems be imperfect.

But then again, I think that's also the beauty of humanity in general. We are imperfect in so many ways yet most of us (or at least the silent majority) continue to love and work and, well... try to live. Not just survive, live. I think there something strangely wonderful in that.

Yep.

Although, I guess I'm not so much cynical about the idea of democracy, as I think it doesn't actually EXIST in practice right now.

I believe that most Western societies are actually oligarchies, and they should just admit it already.

It's weird, given how cynical I am about American politics atm, but I'm really not that cynical about democracy
