What are some things that you're supposed to like but can only feel cynical about? (Either fandom or RL. OR both.)

For me, it's Best Buddies (a group meant to have high schoolers befriend and mentor students with disabilities), only because I was in it in high school and it was filled with hypocrites who were only in it for the community service hours or because they knew it made them look good. I was the one of the few who ever sat with my "Buddy" at lunch. I overheard the president making an ableist joke. They didn't really care. So I quit.

I love the idea and I'm sure it does good things in a lot of schools, but I can't help but feel many are probably like mine was.

I did Best Buddies my first two years of university, but I guess being a college chapter it was pretty different. I had a great time, and I think everybody involved really made an effort.

I half agree. I like the concept of democracy, and I feel it can and does work. But the problem is that in its current state it's far too prone to corruption.

I'm not so much cynical about any one political system. They all seem to have the same weakness: people. There are simply too many people that are stupid, selfish, assholish, or otherwise not someone I want to trust with making decisions for other people. Plenty of people are great, but there are enough to ruin anything good once they get their hands on it.

Yep.

Although, I guess I'm not so much cynical about the idea of democracy, as I think it doesn't actually EXIST in practice right now.

I believe that most Western societies are actually oligarchies, and they should just admit it already.

Ironically a commercial for Disney Parks just came on.

It's not even the Parks, I don't mind those, it's their business model. I think the movies are fine, and do have a serious impact on people, but the amount of people who are so fanatic about it they don't see sense is astounding. This mostly applies to their Canon, LA Subsidiaries, and Marvel, but with Marvel I just don't get the appeal. It's like the most perfectly calculated thing to be as middling as possible and yet it's huge BUT as long as people are having fun, who cares.

(& I won't pretend like I think they're all terrible, it's just I don't get 99% of it.)

Long time best friends.

Sure I have some long time friends who used to be best friends but they've since moved more into a "casual friends" capacity and I kind of like it that way? New best friends aren't going to joke about "that really embarassing thing in high school we know you hated" or try to tell me how I feel about something based on 15 year old evidence of how I felt when i was /twelve/.


Sure I can see how it might happen sometimes but I don't see it nearly as common or renowned as media stories would have me think.

And I'm glad for it.

Charities, in general. Like, I fully support the idea! It's great that people want to help each other! But I've seen too many that outright lie about accounting and donations (Locks of Love), or are fronts for or otherwise related to politics I can't support (the Salvation Army being formally anti-LGBT).

Instead, I donate to local food banks, and research the hell out of anything national.

I'm sure they exist, somewhere - but man, I've seen so many people who just settle, or stay together because they fear being alone, or because of the kids, or whatever.

Anti-X programs in school (bullying, drug, etc). Half the time the adults leading it are idealistic and out of touch, and the only kids who listen aren't going to do any of those things anyway.

Equality between the sexes

I actually think that someday equality between races will be achieved (in the far flung future unfortunately) just because it seems as though, over time, racial groups are becoming more and more broad.

And as globalization proceeds, I think people will find that culture separates us far more than race.

But I don't think that equality between the sexes will ever be achieved due to biological differences and the role that sex and attraction plays in interactions. (I'd like to hope that with LGBT people becoming more prominent in society it might ease this, but I don't think it will, truthfully).

Honestly, I've found myself growing LESS cynical over time, despite shit like the Homeless Year, bad experiences with people and such.

I don't know. I joke that if a pessimist is a disappointed optimist, then I'm a disappointed pessimist. Despite all my efforts, my life just refused to be bad enough for me to justify my outlook.
