The perfect couple or the perfect marriage/family.

I'm sure they exist, somewhere - but man, I've seen so many people who just settle, or stay together because they fear being alone, or because of the kids, or whatever.

For what it's worth, I definitely don't think my marriage is perfect -- but I've stayed with my husband because I sincerely love him, and because we make sense. It's been eight years, but I still love spending time with him; I still miss him when we're apart for too long; I still sometimes get butterflies in my stomach when he's around; I still find him hot. He's still the first person I want to talk to when something's happened to me, either good or bad. And I still want to share my life with him, because life is more enjoyable when he's involved.

It happens. But, yeah, a lot of people do settle, and a lot of people try to force themselves to be something they're not for the sake of being in the kind of relationship that they're "supposed" to have. It's cliche, but life's way too short for that.

Ugh, that kind of relationship is TERRIFYING to me. *shudder* Mostly because I know what kind of shit I would've settled for when I was younger, and that was with someone ELSE in the system having the relationship.

Thankfully, my husband has really made me realize that a relationship can actually be something fun, and not, "Well, he doesn't rape me too much." He has his hobbies (dance, 80s musicals, cooking), I have mine (comics, cults, multi), so we can get some space from each other, but I'm glad to see him, and when times are bad, I know he's got my back.

The Homeless Year would've been a much colder, darker year without him. When I'm with him, I feel like us together are stronger and better than us apart.

Plus, you know, guy was willing to learn new recipes that he could get me (recovering from an eating disorder) to eat and enjoy. Anyone willing to do that wins my loyalty for life!

A relationship is really only as good as you make it. I feel like I lucked out, but who knows... my SO might be the one "settling". I like to think she wouldn't do that, though.
