(Anonymous) 2015-04-02 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)Activism exists outside of Tumblr. I said social justice, not SJW.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-02 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)Re: Popular/Renowned Things You're Cynical About
(Anonymous) 2015-04-02 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)No, I'm not. A whole lot of actual, real life, social justice groups are terrible to other minorities outside their group.
Groups who fight for racial equality that shit on races not their own. Biphobia and transphobia by "LGBT" groups abounds. Do you think problems only exist on Tumblr?
Re: Popular/Renowned Things You're Cynical About
(Anonymous) 2015-04-02 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)Sadly, they probably aren't. Like they said - it's really common for activist groups to be complete assholes to other groups outside of their own. Which, on a personal level, always struck me as pretty stupid.
Re: Popular/Renowned Things You're Cynical About
(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 12:38 am (UTC)(link)Well, most groups want to promote their own interest as the most important ones and to do that, they attack other groups. They obviously don't attack the majority since they want as many allies as possible, so the target is other ("less important") minorities.
And the sad part? That that works.
Re: Popular/Renowned Things You're Cynical About
I'm cynical about our ability to effect lasting change. I'm cynical about solving one problem just for another to pop up, or for a different group to slide into the position of "most hated." I'm cynical due to what you've mentioned: the tendency for members of a marginalized group to turn around and marginalize others. I'm cynical due to social justice being used by some as an excuse to mistreat those whom they perceive as lesser. I'm cynical due to the backlash that's developed against certain forms of social justice, the seeming intensification of prejudice and bigotry in the past few years, the resurgent popularity of retrograde ideas regarding gender, race, etc. I'm cynical due to the fact that, even if progress is made where I live, that doesn't mean that it's been made in the next state over, or in the next country over.
Sometimes, it just feels completely hopeless, and I don't have enough faith in humanity to believe that we can overcome injustice.
Re: Popular/Renowned Things You're Cynical About
(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 03:10 am (UTC)(link)But I think, to me, what you have to hang on to is that there can be practical, immediate changes for the better. You can live your life better and there can be changes in your state. And whatever else happens, if you do that stuff, the world is a better place than it was before & peoples' lives are better than they were before. And that's a real, meaningful thing. And I think any change in that direction is good and worth striving for.
So, sure, social justice a shit. But at the same time - life is measurably, quantifiably better for LBTG people (for instance) than it was 50 years ago. And even if that never gets around the world, and even if we never get rid of all the injustice, that's fucking amazing. It is, to me, well worth it for that.
Re: Popular/Renowned Things You're Cynical About
But this...
You can live your life better and there can be changes in your state. And whatever else happens, if you do that stuff, the world is a better place than it was before & peoples' lives are better than they were before. And that's a real, meaningful thing. And I think any change in that direction is good and worth striving for.
...is really, really beautifully stated. I think you're a pretty awesome person, anon.
