Charities, in general. Like, I fully support the idea! It's great that people want to help each other! But I've seen too many that outright lie about accounting and donations (Locks of Love), or are fronts for or otherwise related to politics I can't support (the Salvation Army being formally anti-LGBT).

Instead, I donate to local food banks, and research the hell out of anything national.

If the SA is not longer anti-LGBT, why would you not support it? Isn't it good they changed their policies?

Formally (as in, it is an openly stated policy), not formerly (as in, they no longer do this). They do this and it is shitty.

I've not seen anything about them changing their views, honestly. I just looked it up, and I see a bunch of "no, that's totally a rumor" kind of justification (it's not a rumor). They've done it as recently as 2013 (official policy was "It's a sin", referring people to conversion therapy, etc). I just don't trust that; a possible year isn't good enough when there are plenty of other places I could put money.

Not a bad attitude, considering everything. That said, are you one of the people who subscribes to the theory that high overhead costs = Bad charity, or no?

[Serious question, btw]

Eh, it depends on the type of work, I would think, and what they consider overhead. I think most of the money an organization receives should go toward the actual goal. But some charities (I imagine things like advocacy, Doctors without Borders, things like that) would have more overhead than a food pantry. Truthfully, I care far more about honesty, transparency, and reputation (from reasonable sources, at least). I am, well, not an accountant.

Another reason I prefer local, I guess. I'm sure local charities don't have nearly the overhead, via advertizing and national (or especially international) shipping and the like.

SA

Ahh, okay. I just wondering since most places that have a really low overhead actually tend to be worse at what they do [mainly because that means they don't invest in the equipment they need to be efficient, etc], which something that a lot of people seem to just not think about.

[I also used to work for a charity, so I kind of learned about that the hard way. @_@]

Charities are one of those things that you just have to accept is good enough, because perfection is far too unattainable. It's a shame that things like record keeping or advertising can be so expensive, but they are necessary for operation. As long as the charity makes a positive impact, I don't have a quarrel.

I'm glad you said something about this. I hate how people don't realize that an organization can't survive if they're spending money on nothing but their stated goals. I'm just as happy helping a good place pay their electricity bill as anything else.

I have a big problem with this sort of charity:

"Hi, poor people! We'll give you some food but you'd better convert to OUR religion first, and God wants you to poop out as many babies as possible, so you'd better not use any of that naughty birth control!"
