Re: vegetarians or vegans of fs?
(Anonymous) 2015-04-02 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)Decide what kind of veghead you want to be (and what your reasons are) because that changes the options you'll have to work with. I.e., if you go completely vegan, you'll be checking everything for gelatin, and other animal byproducts. Ovo-lacto (think that's what it is) you still get eggs and dairy. (Why something that comes OUT of a chicken is not classified as meat, IDK), and there's another one where you can eat fish. Or any combination of dairy, eggs, fish (or one or none of those) you're interested in.
If you're in your 20s-40s, some studies suggest you don't have to worry too much about getting all your protein daily, just as much as you can. If you're over 40, have a weak or compromised immune system, you'll have to be a LOT more religious about meeting your protein minimums daily, otherwise you'll get sick. Repeatedly and often. I know whereof I speak, OP; don't be me.
If you're not into reading labels like it's your job, to figure out if you're getting all your RDA of everything, you can top up with a regular multivitamin. If you have a fairly nutritious day, you can skip the pill. If you've eaten badly throughout the day (Frex, coffee and potato chips for breakfast, lunch and supper...what? It's vegetarian!), suck it up and take the pill. (Most of them are horse pills. I'm convinced they do that to give you an incentive to eat better.)
What else....Oh yeah, coffee and potato chips qualifies as a vegetarian meal; there are a lot of junk food options that qualify as vegetarian. They don't qualify as healthy. You can have a bad meal, or even a bad day, but if you make it a regular habit, you'll be one of the many unhealthy vegetarians you see going around out there.
Do you cook? You need to know how to cook. Cookbooks are better than recipes on the Net, because often the difficulty level will be completely different than what's posted, and the veg cookbooks usually have to be strict about their meals meeting the minimums. This takes more time out of your day, so bear that in mind.
My last tip: Quick cook oatmeal, bought in bulk. You can add what you want to it. Several orders of magnitude better than the little packets of the instant stuff, that are mostly sugar.
Re: vegetarians or vegans of fs?
Well, it is meat. It's an animal product. On the other hand it doesn't harm an animal to consume it, since chickens will lay eggs regardless of whether or not the egg is fertilized. They're chicken menstruation, basically.
Your ethics may vary, but I get my eggs from my mom's birds which I know are well-cared for and fed nice things and have enough space to run around and not be stress. They're very nice birds. :)
