vegetarians or vegans of fs?
(Anonymous) 2015-04-02 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)i've searched online but i don't know which sites are reputable and which are jumping on the health fad. is there a primer you would recommend?
thanks in advance.
Re: vegetarians or vegans of fs?
- don't jump straight into the veg diet, slowly wean yourself off the meat and slowly introduce yourself to your meat replacements
- you may need supplements for some things
- beans are a great protein source and come in many varieties
- can be expensive - do you have a local farmers market you can go to?
- will you still be eating eggs? if so, they're a good protein source. If you're switching for ethical reasons, look for PROPER free range chickens. Not barn hectare limited ones where it's 2 chickens to a metre.
- if you end up leaving the veg diet in a year or five because of health reasons, that is okay. maybe switch it out to meat once a week, hunt for all the affordable ethically produced foods you can (it normally does cost more for the free range animals but the prices seem to be evening out)
This link is less a guide and more a list of challenges to prepare for. I think it's better to know beforehand so you can take suitable measures like vitamins or increasing X food intake than being surprised by some issues:

Where do you live? you'll find most restaurants suck but I've got some aussie suggestions for city-take-out if you need food fast
Don't eat fake bacon it is horrible

(Anonymous) 2015-04-02 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)If you already enjoy or think you'll enjoy cooking, I'd say just look at it as an opportunity to get creative and explore veggies and combinations you might not have thought of before. I also don't have a ton of money or time for cooking, so a lot of my meals are pretty basic: stir-fried mix of fresh veggies, brown rice, and some protein if I'm feeling like I need it (tofu or just a handful of nuts on top, since they add a nice crunch). I also genuinely enjoy salads, so that probably helps.
One of my favorite recipe sites is not solely vegetarian and doesn't update much any more, but the recipes are still archived and flagged for vegetarian/vegan options:
http://cheaphealthygood.blogspot.com/
For just vegan foods, try Post Punk Kitchen. I have one of their recipe books and have enjoyed it quite a bit!
http://www.theppk.com/
The book is the "Veganomicon" btw. It's nice because it doesn't just have recipes, but it covers a lot of the basics of cooking vegan/vegetarian foods, so you can take those basics and apply them to other recipes, as well.
Also, tofu: bake it! A lot of people don't like the texture much, but I promise baking it does magical things. Here are some good, easily adaptable instructions on marinating and baking tofu so it's got a really pleasant flavor and texture:
http://www.thekitchn.com/how-to-make-baked-tofu-cooking-lessons-from-the-kitchn-74358
If you're looking for more of the serious health details, I'm not your person, but I think following the general rule of "more green, lots of variety, and occasional protein" gets you farther than a lot of people think.
Re: vegetarians or vegans of fs?
(Anonymous) 2015-04-02 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)Decide what kind of veghead you want to be (and what your reasons are) because that changes the options you'll have to work with. I.e., if you go completely vegan, you'll be checking everything for gelatin, and other animal byproducts. Ovo-lacto (think that's what it is) you still get eggs and dairy. (Why something that comes OUT of a chicken is not classified as meat, IDK), and there's another one where you can eat fish. Or any combination of dairy, eggs, fish (or one or none of those) you're interested in.
If you're in your 20s-40s, some studies suggest you don't have to worry too much about getting all your protein daily, just as much as you can. If you're over 40, have a weak or compromised immune system, you'll have to be a LOT more religious about meeting your protein minimums daily, otherwise you'll get sick. Repeatedly and often. I know whereof I speak, OP; don't be me.
If you're not into reading labels like it's your job, to figure out if you're getting all your RDA of everything, you can top up with a regular multivitamin. If you have a fairly nutritious day, you can skip the pill. If you've eaten badly throughout the day (Frex, coffee and potato chips for breakfast, lunch and supper...what? It's vegetarian!), suck it up and take the pill. (Most of them are horse pills. I'm convinced they do that to give you an incentive to eat better.)
What else....Oh yeah, coffee and potato chips qualifies as a vegetarian meal; there are a lot of junk food options that qualify as vegetarian. They don't qualify as healthy. You can have a bad meal, or even a bad day, but if you make it a regular habit, you'll be one of the many unhealthy vegetarians you see going around out there.
Do you cook? You need to know how to cook. Cookbooks are better than recipes on the Net, because often the difficulty level will be completely different than what's posted, and the veg cookbooks usually have to be strict about their meals meeting the minimums. This takes more time out of your day, so bear that in mind.
My last tip: Quick cook oatmeal, bought in bulk. You can add what you want to it. Several orders of magnitude better than the little packets of the instant stuff, that are mostly sugar.
Re: vegetarians or vegans of fs?
Well, it is meat. It's an animal product. On the other hand it doesn't harm an animal to consume it, since chickens will lay eggs regardless of whether or not the egg is fertilized. They're chicken menstruation, basically.
Your ethics may vary, but I get my eggs from my mom's birds which I know are well-cared for and fed nice things and have enough space to run around and not be stress. They're very nice birds. :)

(Anonymous) 2015-04-02 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)In my experience, as long as you get that protein (which can easily come from non-meat sources), vegetarianism is really not that hard. Veganism on the other hand is more of a commitment, and you need to plan your meals very carefully, and be smart about covering all your nutrients.
And personally, I rather like most of the "fake meat" sold. Spicy black bean burgers > real hamburgers, imo. I always have veggie patties, or even "fake chicken" in my freezer. But that stuff isn't for everyone.

I only mention this because I'd never heard of anyone else having trouble before me, and it meant I kept on for longer than I should've because I simply thought veg = healthier. Sometimes, bodies are weird. Good luck in your endeavor! May it be more successful than ours!

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 04:03 am (UTC)(link)My parents tried to go vegetarian too before they had me, and even with all the nutritional monitoring they did, theit health still took a nosedive.
So yeah, it definitely varies from body to body.

Re: vegetarians or vegans of fs?
I was actually diagnosed while I was a vegetarian; I showed up at the psychiatrist's office TALKINGLIKETHISANDICOULDNOTSHUTUPNOMATTERHOWHARDITRIED and I hadn't slept in about three days. Meds helped, but not enough; it was adding meat back into my diet that got my mood back to manageable levels.
Re: vegetarians or vegans of fs?
At least I didn't have it that bad, it was mostly just feeling tired and rundown all the time.

Re: vegetarians or vegans of fs?
<- couldn't be vego if I wanted, $ and immune system say no.
Re: vegetarians or vegans of fs?
And this is why I get frustrated with people who are like, "Can't afford food? Just go veg! Problem SOLVED!"

Re: vegetarians or vegans of fs?
It's hard to get enough of these with a vegetarian diet, unfortunately. Not impossible, but it means you need to eat ludicrious amounts of kidney beans and kale and such, and for some people that's just not realistic.

Re: vegetarians or vegans of fs?
Part of that reason is that vegan cheese sucks balls though lol.
